Many schools now give every student a tablet computer. Supporters argue that tablets make learning more interesting and give students access to a huge amount of information. For example, a student studying volcanoes can watch videos of real eruptions instead of just reading about them in a textbook. However, some teachers have noticed problems. Students often switch between apps and find it hard to concentrate on one task for long. In addition, some research suggests that people remember information better when they read it on paper than on a screen. For these reasons, tablets should not completely replace paper textbooks. Schools need to decide which tasks are better done on screens and which on paper, and use both wisely.

In the past, most people in Japan bought books at local bookstores. Customers could look through the shelves and often found interesting titles by chance. Since the 2000s, however, more and more people have been buying books online, where they can order almost any title from home and have it delivered the next day. As a result, the number of bookstores in Japan has fallen sharply, to roughly half of what it was around 2000. Some bookstores are trying to survive by adding cafés or holding events with authors, turning themselves into places where people can spend time rather than just shop.
