When Mika moved from Osaka to a small town in Nagano, she could not speak to her new neighbors without feeling nervous. Her classmate Yuto suggested that she join the town's volunteer cleanup group, which met every Sunday morning. At first, Mika only picked up trash quietly, but the older members kept asking her about life in Osaka, and soon she was chatting with everyone. Six months later, the group asked Mika to design a poster for the town festival. The poster was so popular that the town now uses it on its website. Mika says that the cleanup group taught her that the easiest way to make friends is to work side by side toward the same goal.

- 1Why did Mika join the volunteer cleanup group?
答えd Because Yuto suggested it to her.
解説Why の設問は because / to do の形を探す。 Her classmate Yuto suggested that she join the town's volunteer cleanup group。Because she wanted to design a poster.(ポスターを作りたかった)は、ポスターの依頼が6か月後の話で参加の理由ではない。Because her parents were members(親がメンバー)、To earn money for the town festival(祭りの資金集め)は本文にない。
- 2How did Mika become friends with the older members?
答えb By talking with them about Osaka while cleaning together.
根拠は the older members kept asking her about life in Osaka, and soon she was chatting with everyone。By designing a poster for each of them(一人ひとりにポスター)、By inviting them to visit Osaka(大阪へ招待)、By teaching them how to use the town's website(ウェブサイトの使い方を教える)は、どれも本文にない行動。
How の答えは by 〜ing。 - 3Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
答えb Yuto designed a poster for the town festival.
Mika felt nervous … at first(初めは緊張した)・The cleanup group met on Sunday mornings(日曜の朝に集まった)・The town uses Mika's poster on its website(町がウェブサイトで使っている)は本文どおり。
答えa Mika learned that working together is an easy way to make friends.
解説最終文 the easiest way to make friends is to work side by side toward the same goal の言い換えが正解。Mika moved to Nagano because she wanted to join a volunteer group.(グループに入りたくて移住)は移住の理由が本文になく、半分だけ正しい作り。Mika talked with everyone … from her very first day(初日から全員と話した)は At first, … quietly と矛盾。used all over Japan(日本中で使われた)は町のウェブサイトだけなので言い過ぎ。
The museum may open a new wing next spring.
答えb It is possible that the museum will open a new wing next spring.
解説may(〜かもしれない)を It is possible that(〜という可能性がある)で言い換えた選択肢が正解。The museum opened a new wing last spring.(昨春開いた)は時期のずれ。The museum has already opened a new wing.(すでに開いた)は予測を事実にした時制のずれ。
【覚える】may / might / could=可能性。 Online shopping has grown quickly because more people own smartphones.
答えa The spread of smartphones has helped online shopping grow.
The spread of smartphones has helped online shopping grow. Online shopping has made more people buy smartphones.(ネット通販がスマホを買わせた)は因果の逆転。Everyone now shops online(全員がネットで買う)は言い過ぎ。
【覚える】because / so / lead to / result in は因果の向きを矢印で確認する。 During rush hour, trains in this city are less crowded than buses.
答えd During rush hour, buses are more crowded than trains.
A is less 〜 than B(A は B ほど〜でない)=B is more 〜 than A(B のほうが〜だ)。 buses are less crowded than trains(バスのほうが空いている)は向きだけ変えたすり替えで、意味が逆。Trains … are never crowded(電車は決して混まない)は言い過ぎ。
The library does not allow food inside.
答えa Eating is not permitted in the library.
Visitors may eat in the library if they are quiet.(静かなら食べてよい)は本文と逆。 Drinks are not allowed(飲み物禁止)はありそうな常識だが、本文は food についてしか書いていない。
Ms. Ito taught Kenji how to play the piano.
答えd Kenji was taught how to play the piano by Ms. Ito.
A taught B〜=B was taught 〜 by A Ms. Ito learned to play the piano from Kenji(先生がケンジから習った)も向きが逆。played the piano together at a concert(コンサートで一緒に弾いた)は本文にない。
Green tea contains caffeine, although less than coffee does.
答えa Coffee contains more caffeine than green tea.
Coffee contains more caffeine than green tea. contains more caffeine than coffee(コーヒーより多い)は向きが逆。
A high school asked 200 first-year students how they usually get to school. Forty-five percent said they ride a bicycle, 30 percent take the train, 15 percent walk, and the rest come by bus. Among the students who take the train, about half said they read or study during the trip. The school is planning to build a larger bicycle parking area next year.

- 11How many of the 200 students come to school by bus?
答えa 20
- 12About how many students read or study on the train?
Among the students who take the train, about half(そのうち約半数)なので約30人。
Among A, about half=A のうち約半数。
答えd Fewer than half of the students ride a bicycle to school.
More students walk to school than take the train.(徒歩のほうが電車より多い)は徒歩15%<電車30%なので比較が逆。The school has already built a larger bicycle parking area.(すでに作った)は is planning to build(予定)の時制のずれ。All the students who take the train study(電車通学の全員が勉強)は about half なので言い過ぎ。
45%=fewer than half、60%=more than half、25%=a quarter。
These changes, however, came at a cost. / During the twentieth century, farming changed dramatically. (A) Farmers began using large machines, chemical fertilizers and new types of seeds. (B) As a result, the amount of food produced on each farm rose sharply. (C) In many areas, the soil has become less fertile, and some rivers have been polluted by chemicals. (D)
A researcher wanted to know whether music helps plants grow. / (a) The experiment showed that the plants exposed to music grew slightly taller. (b) She carried out an experiment: she played music to one group of plants and kept another group in silence. (c) However, she warned that more studies were needed before drawing any firm conclusions.
答えd (b)→(a)→(c)
解説an experiment(不定冠詞=初出)で実験を導入する (b) が先で、The experiment(定冠詞=既出)で受ける (a) が後。
【覚える】整序の手がかり:a → the(初出→既出)、指示語、つなぎ語(However / As a result)。 The speaker's argument was cogent; even people who had disagreed at first were convinced.
答えa convincing
解説セミコロンの後 even people who had disagreed at first were convinced(最初は反対だった人さえ納得した)が cogent の説明になっているので、プラスの意味の convincing(説得力のある)。confusing(分かりにくい)は納得した結果と逆。boring(退屈な)、rude(失礼な)もマイナスの意味で文脈に合わない。
The island is home to many endemic species, or species found nowhere else in the world.
答えa found only in one place
解説言い換えの or の後 species found nowhere else in the world(世界のほかのどこにもいない種)が endemic の意味なので found only in one place(1か所にしかいない)が正解。in danger of dying out(絶滅の危機にある)は語の雰囲気で選んだ誤り。brought from other countries(外国から持ち込まれた)は逆の「外来種」。very large in size(とても大きい)は根拠がない。
【覚える】A, or B=A、つまり B(言い換えの or)。 - 18Not until she got home did she notice that she had lost her wallet.
Not until she got home が文頭に出たので、後ろが did she notice と倒置になっている。She did not notice that she had lost her wallet until she got home.(家に着くまで気づかなかった)に戻すと「家に着いて初めて気づいた」。 「着いた後でなくした」は had lost(それより前になくした)と矛盾。
【覚える】Not until A+倒置=A して初めて〜した(=It was not until A that〜)。 - 19The number of people who visit the old temple in winter has been increasing.
解説who visit the old temple in winter は people を説明する関係詞節。 The number (of people) has been increasing が骨格で、主語の中心は number。動詞 has(単数)とも一致する。
【覚える】The number of+複数名詞=〜の数(単数扱い)/A number of+複数名詞=多くの〜(複数扱い)。
What did Mika learn from the cleanup group?
答えShe learned that the easiest way to make friends is to work side by side toward the same goal.
Mika says that the cleanup group taught her that〜。 She learned that working together toward the same goal is the easiest way to make friends.
A taught B that〜 ⇔ B learned (from A) that〜。 What surprised me most was how quickly the children learned the rules.
解説採点ポイントは①What surprised me most=私を最も驚かせたもの(主語のかたまり)②was が動詞 ③how quickly the children learned the rules=子どもたちがいかに速くルールを覚えたか(補語の疑問詞節)。
