- 1It is often said that young people today read less than earlier generations. In fact, they may read more than ever; they simply read on screens rather than on paper.
答えd Young people may not read less; they read in a different way.
It is often said / Many people think 〜→In fact / However の後が主張。 - 2It is true that robots can now perform many tasks once done by humans. But they still struggle with work that requires understanding people's feelings, such as nursing and teaching.
答えd Jobs that require understanding feelings are still hard for robots.
It is true that 〜. But …
It is true that A. But B.=確かにA。しかしB(主張はB)。 - 3What makes a good leader is not so much intelligence as the ability to listen.
答えb Listening matters more than intelligence for a leader.
解説not so much A as B は「AというよりむしろB」で、重点は後ろの B(the ability to listen=聞く力)。 Good leaders are not intelligent equally important(同じくらい大事)も重点の差を無視している。
【覚える】not so much A as B=B rather than A=AというよりむしろB。 - 4Why do some languages disappear? The main reason is not war or disease but the decision of parents to raise their children in a more widely spoken language.
答えa Parents choose to bring up their children in a more common language.
not A but B で、戦争・病気(A)は否定され、親の選択(B)が主な理由。
The main reason is not A but B.=主な理由はAではなくB。 - 5The rapid growth of tourism in the region has resulted from cheaper air travel.
解説A result from B は「AはBから生じる(B→A)」なので、原因は from の後ろの cheaper air travel(安い空の旅)、結果は観光の急成長。A result in B(A→B)と向きが逆なので注意。
A result from B(B→A)/A result in B(A→B)。
- 6Little did she realize how much her words had hurt him.
答えb She had no idea how much her words had hurt him.
She little realized 〜 に戻して読む。little を「少し」と読んだ realized a little は逆の意味。knew very well(よく知っていた)も逆。did not say anything that hurt him
(Little did I dream 〜)。 - 7The last thing he wanted was to disappoint his parents.
答えa He did not want to disappoint his parents at all.
He did not want to disappoint his parents at all. disappointed his parents in the end(結局失望させた)、wanted to disappoint later は本文にない。
【覚える】the last thing S want=Sが最もしたくないこと。the last person to do=最も〜しそうにない人。 - 8The two brothers never meet without arguing about money.
答えb Whenever the brothers meet, they argue about money.
解説never A without B は「Bせずに A することはない」=「A すれば必ず B」。 Whenever the brothers meet, they argue about money. only when they are apart(離れているときだけ)は本文と矛盾。
【覚える】never A without B=whenever A, B(Aすれば必ずB)。 - 9His explanation was far from clear.
答えb not at all
解説far from 〜 は「〜から遠い」=「少しも〜でない」で not at all と同じ。hardly・fail to・anything but などと同じ「not のない否定」。fairly(かなり)と取ると逆の意味になる。almost(ほとんど)、much more(ずっと多く)も否定にならない。
【覚える】far from=anything but=not at all(少しも〜ない)。 - 10The heavy snow prevented the train from arriving on time.
答えc Because of the heavy snow, the train was late.
Because of the heavy snow, the train was late. arrived on time in spite of the snow は逆。The heavy snow stopped before 〜 は雪がやんだ話で別。The train was not late
- 11What the students found(A) most surprising(B) about the trip was(C) the kindness(D) of strangers.
What the students found most surprising about the trip
- 12Many cities have introduced bike-sharing programs. This has reduced traffic in some areas, but not in others.
- 13Unlike his talkative sister, Ben is rather taciturn.
解説Unlike(〜と違って)で talkative(おしゃべりな)と対比されているので、反対の意味の quiet(無口な)が正解。cheerful(陽気な)、rude(失礼な)、intelligent(知的な)は talkative の反対にならない。
【覚える】Unlike A, B=Aと違ってB(反対の意味)。taciturn=無口な。 - 14The island's fauna — the animals that live there — includes several species found nowhere else.
climate(気候)、plants(植物)、people(人々)はダッシュ以下と合わない。
fauna(動物相)/flora(植物相)。 - 15Some people skip breakfast, but I never do so.
eat breakfast は do so の中身ではない(never eat breakfast だと「決して食べない」で逆)。talk about people、get up early
[1] Many teachers worry that students will use artificial intelligence (AI) to do their homework for them. Some schools have even banned AI tools completely. (A) [2] However, banning AI may not be the best answer. Students will need to use such tools in their future jobs, and a ban simply teaches them to use AI secretly. (B) A more realistic approach is to teach students how to use AI wisely. [3] For example, one teacher asks her students to have an AI write a short essay and then to find the mistakes in it. (C) Through this activity, students learn that AI can sound confident even when it is wrong. They also practice checking facts, a skill that is far from easy. [4] Of course, AI should not replace thinking. If students let a machine write every essay, they will never learn to organize their own ideas. (D) The goal, then, is not to keep AI out of the classroom but to make sure that students remain in control of it.

- 16Why does the author think that banning AI may not be the best answer?
答えb Students will need AI in the future, and a ban only leads to secret use.
AI tools never make mistakes Teachers do not know how to use AI、Most schools have already stopped banning AI
- 17Where does the following sentence best fit? "These students are often surprised by how many errors they find."
- 18The phrase "far from easy" in paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to .
答えd very difficult
A:とても難しい(very difficult)。 quite simple(とても簡単)は逆の意味。not important(重要でない)、easy to forget(忘れやすい)は easy の意味を取り違えている。
- 19Which best describes the author's attitude toward AI in education?
答えc Positive, but aware of its risks
Of course, AI should not replace thinking.(考えることの代わりになってはならない)と危険も指摘しているので Positive, but aware of its risks。 no concerns at all(全く心配なし)は第4段落と矛盾。Uninterested(無関心)も誤り。
- 20What is the author's main point?
答えc Students should learn to use AI wisely while still thinking for themselves.
AI should be banned AI can write better essays than students Teachers should let AI grade essays
【覚える】主張=最終文の not A but B の B+However の後の主張文。 - 21Which is the best title for the passage?
答えb Teaching Students to Stay in Control of AI
Teaching Students to Stay in Control of AI が正解。Why AI Should Be Banned How AI Writes Essays The History of AI
The new policy may reduce waste. The new policy has reduced waste.
【覚える】may / might / could / will(可能性・予測)≠ has done / did(事実)。 Kate visited Kyoto in spring and enjoyed the cherry blossoms. Kate visited Kyoto in spring because she wanted to see the cherry blossoms.
【覚える】and(出来事の並列)を because(理由)にするのは典型のずらし。 Cities with more parks tend to have healthier residents. Building more parks makes residents healthier.
【覚える】tend to / be associated with(相関)≠ make / cause(因果)。
The idea that intelligence is fixed at birth has been challenged by recent research.
①that 以下(intelligence is fixed at birth)は The idea の中身を説明する同格の that 節で「〜という考え」と訳す。
【覚える】the idea / fact / belief that S V=〜という考え・事実(同格)。 According to the author, what will happen if students let a machine write every essay?
答えThey will never learn to organize their own ideas./Students will never learn how to organize their own ideas.
If students let a machine write every essay, they will never learn to organize their own ideas.。 採点ポイントは、質問の未来(what will happen)に合わせた will never learn と、organize their own ideas の2点。let O do(Oに〜させる)にも注意。
What will happen if 〜?→If 節の主節(will 〜)を取り出して答える。
