Sea otters are often called a "keystone species" because so many other living things depend on them. Sea otters eat sea urchins, spiny animals that feed on kelp, a large seaweed that forms underwater forests. When otters disappear, urchin numbers soar(1), and the kelp forests are quickly devoured(2). Without the forests, many fish lose their homes. In the early twentieth century, hunting nearly wiped out sea otters along the Pacific coast. Since then, protection laws have allowed their numbers to rebound(3) in many areas, and the kelp forests have begun to recover as well. Scientists say the sea otter shows how the loss of a single animal can reverberate(4) through an entire ecosystem.
