- 1The plan sounded good on paper. , it proved almost impossible to carry out.
答えd However
Moreover(さらに)は同じ向きの追加、For instance(例えば)は例示、Therefore(それゆえ)は前が原因のときに使うので不可。
prove (to be) C=Cだとわかる。 - 2Bees are essential to farming. , many fruits and vegetables could not grow without them.
答えb In fact
Otherwise(さもなければ)は条件、Instead(その代わりに)は置き換えで、前の内容を補強できない。
- 3Some birds fly thousands of kilometers every year, others spend their whole lives in one small area.
because(〜なので)は因果、unless(〜でない限り)は条件、so that(〜するように)は目的で、対比にならない。
- 4Most of the participants did not enjoy the program at first. , several later said that it had changed their lives.
答えa Nevertheless
Therefore(それゆえ)は順当な結果、In other words(言い換えれば)は同じ内容の言い換えで向きが変わらない、For example(例えば)は例示で不可。
【覚える】nevertheless=nonetheless=even so(それでも)。 - 5The museum is not a place to simply look at old objects; , it is a place where visitors can make things themselves.
解説not A; rather B で「AではなくむしろB」。 not A but B otherwise(さもなければ)は条件、similarly(同様に)は類似、consequently(その結果)は因果で、否定→訂正の流れにならない。
【覚える】not A; rather B=not A but B(主張はB)。
- 6Some studies suggest that listening to music while studying may help certain students concentrate.
答えb Music may help some students focus while studying.
解説suggest(示唆する)・may(かもしれない)・certain(ある種の)のぼかしを保った Music may help some students focus while studying. Music helps all students は all が言い過ぎ。 Students who concentrate well tend to listen to music
- 7In the survey, cities with more bicycle lanes had fewer traffic accidents.
答えc The survey found a connection between bike lanes and fewer accidents.
The survey found a connection between 〜(関連を見いだした)が正解。Bicycle lanes were proved to reduce accidents Cities with fewer accidents built more bicycle lanes have no relation は本文と矛盾。
- 8Train tickets in the country are cheaper than bus tickets, but buses run more often.
答えa Buses run more often than trains but cost more.
Buses run more often than trains but cost more. Trains are cheaper and run more often Bus tickets are cheaper
- 9The village could become a popular tourist spot if a new station is built.
答えb A new station might make the village popular with tourists.
A new station might make the village popular with tourists. A new station has already been built
【覚える】could / might / may+if 節=可能性。 - 10Hardly any of the students had heard of the writer before the class.
答えb Almost none of the students knew of the writer before the class.
Almost none of the students knew of the writer 〜 が正解。Most students already knew None of the students liked the writer The writer visited the class
[1] Not long ago, most students took notes by hand. Today, many bring laptops to class and type almost every word their teachers say. It might seem obvious that typing is better: it is faster, and the notes are easier to read later. [2] Yet some studies have suggested that students who write by hand often understand lectures better. Because handwriting is slower, students cannot write down everything. Instead, they have to listen, decide what is important and put it into their own words. Typing, by contrast, makes it easy to copy down what the teacher says without really thinking about it. [3] This does not mean that laptops should be banned. Laptops allow students to search for information, share notes and organize them easily. For students who have difficulty writing by hand, they can be essential. [4] What matters, in the end, is not the tool but how it is used. A student who types thoughtfully, summarizing rather than copying, may learn just as well as one who writes with a pen.

- 11According to paragraph 2, why do students who write by hand often understand lectures better?
答えb They have to choose the main points and express them in their own words.
Instead, they have to listen, decide what is important and put it into their own words. They can write down every word は本文(cannot write down everything)と逆。Their notes are easier to read later They spend more time reviewing
put it into one's own words=自分の言葉で言う。 - 12Which of the following is NOT mentioned as an advantage of laptops?
解説第3段落に search for information(情報検索)、share notes(ノート共有)、organize them(整理)は書かれている。
- 13In paragraph 2, "by contrast" shows that .
答えd typing is being compared with handwriting
typing is an example of handwriting(例示)、typing is a result of handwriting(因果)、typing is the same as handwriting(言い換え)は、どれも by contrast の働きではない。
【覚える】by contrast / in contrast / on the other hand=対比の合図。 - 14What is the role of paragraph 3?
答えa To admit the benefits of laptops before the conclusion
This does not mean that laptops should be banned.(禁止すべきだということではない)で極端な結論を退け、ノートパソコンの長所を認める段落。 To give another reason why laptops should be banned は逆。To introduce a topic unrelated(無関係な話題)、To report the results of a new experiment(新しい実験結果)は本文にない。
This does not mean that 〜=極端な解釈を退ける譲歩の合図。 - 15Which of the following would the author most likely agree with?
答えa A student who summarizes while typing can learn as well as one who writes by hand.
All students should stop using laptops は all が言い過ぎで、第3段落(禁止すべきではない)とも矛盾。Handwriting is always better は always が言い過ぎ。The faster …, the more they learn
all / always / never は要注意。 - 16Which best summarizes the passage?
答えa How students take notes matters more than whether they use a pen or a laptop.
解説最終段落の not the tool but how it is used(大切なのは道具ではなく使い方)が主旨。 Laptops are faster than pens Students today take more notes than before、Teachers should speak more slowly
【覚える】要約問題は最終段落の not A but B に注目。
- 17Only after she moved abroad did she realize how much she loved her hometown.
答えb She did not realize how much she loved her hometown until she moved abroad.
解説Only after 〜+倒置(did she realize)は「〜して初めて気づいた」で、She did not realize 〜 until she moved abroad. She realized 〜 only after she moved abroad. because she loved her hometown
Only after A did S V=not V until A=It was not until A that S V。 - 18Seldom have I seen such a beautiful sunset.
答えc I have rarely seen such a beautiful sunset.
I have rarely seen 〜 が同じ意味。I have often seen I saw 〜 only once(一度だけ)、I have never seen a sunset(一度も見たことがない)は程度のずれ。
Never / Seldom / Rarely / Hardly / Little+助動詞+S。 - 19He failed to notice the warning sign.
答えc He did not notice the warning sign.
He did not notice the warning sign. tried hard to notice(気づこうと努力した)は意味がずれる。noticed the sign but ignored it(気づいたが無視した)は「気づかなかった」と矛盾。put up the sign(標識を立てた)は無関係。
【覚える】fail to do=not do。never fail to do=必ず〜する。 - 20The flood resulted in the closure of several roads.
答えc Several roads were closed because of the flood.
解説A result in B は「AがBという結果になる(A→B)」で、洪水が原因、道路の閉鎖が結果。Several roads were closed because of the flood. The flood happened because several roads were closed before the flood は時の順序の誤り。had nothing to do with は無関係で矛盾。
A result in B(A→B)⇔ B result from A(BはAから生じる)。 - 21The book I borrowed from the library last week was more interesting than I expected.
答えc book の後に that(which)
解説The book I borrowed は名詞の直後に S+V が続く形で、borrowed の目的語がない→目的格の関係代名詞 that(which)が book の後に省略されている。 The book [I borrowed 〜] was more interesting。 week の後の and、than の後の that は文法的に入らない。
- 22According to the passage, what is one problem with typing notes?
答えIt makes it easy to copy the teacher's words without really thinking about them.
Typing, by contrast, makes it easy to copy down what the teacher says without really thinking about it.。 It(Typing)makes it easy to copy 〜 と without thinking の2点。what the teacher says → the teacher's words make it easy to do の it は形式目的語。
【覚える】make it easy to do=〜するのを簡単にする(it は形式目的語)。 - 23How can a student who types notes learn as well as one who writes by hand?
答えBy typing thoughtfully and summarizing the lecture instead of copying it word for word.
解説根拠は最終文の types thoughtfully, summarizing rather than copying。 rather than copying は instead of copying it word for word と言い換えてよい。
【覚える】How(方法)→By -ing。A rather than B=BではなくA。
