Ⅰ 英文の内容と一致するものを1つ選べ
- 1The "k" in "knight" and "know" is silent today, but it was once pronounced. The spelling stayed the same while the pronunciation changed.
答えa The spelling of "knight" reflects an older pronunciation.
訳本文:knight(騎士)や know(知っている)の k は今は発音されないが、かつては発音されていた。発音が変わる一方で、つづりはそのまま残ったのだ。
答:knight のつづりは昔の発音を反映している。解説つづりはそのまま、発音だけが変わった=つづりは昔の発音の名残なので、The spelling of "knight" reflects an older pronunciation.。has never been pronounced(一度も発音されたことがない)は was once pronounced と逆。has not changed for centuries(何世紀も変わっていない)も逆。added by printers(印刷業者が足した)は本文にない理由をつけ足したダミー。
【覚える】reflect=反映する。silent letter(黙字):knight, know, knee。 - 2The word "debt" came into English from French, in which it had no "b." Later, scholars who admired Latin added a "b" to make it look more like the Latin word debitum. The "b" was never pronounced.
答えb The "b" in "debt" was added for the sake of appearance, not sound.
訳本文:debt(借金)という語はフランス語から英語に入ったが、フランス語では b がなかった。のちに、ラテン語を敬愛する学者たちが、ラテン語の debitum に見た目を似せるために b を加えた。この b は一度も発音されたことがない。
答:debt の b は、音ではなく見た目のために加えられた。解説to make it look more like(見た目を似せるため)と The "b" was never pronounced(一度も発音されなかった)から、for the sake of appearance, not sound(音ではなく見た目のため)。pronounced the "b" for hundreds of years(何百年も発音した)は never と逆。The French word contained a "b"(フランス語に b があった)は had no "b" と逆。removed a "b"(b を取り除いた)も逆。
【覚える】doubt の b も同じ仲間(ラテン語 dubitare に合わせた)。 - 3The word "nice" comes from the Latin nescius, meaning "not knowing." In English it first meant "foolish," and only over many centuries did it come to mean "pleasant."
答えb The meaning of "nice" has changed greatly over time.
訳本文:nice という語は、「知らない」を意味するラテン語 nescius から来ている。英語では最初は「愚かな」という意味で、何世紀もかけてようやく「感じのよい」という意味になった。
答:nice の意味は時とともに大きく変わった。解説「無知な」→「愚かな」→「感じのよい」と大きく意味が変化したので The meaning of "nice" has changed greatly over time.。has always been used as a compliment(ずっとほめ言葉だった)は最初「愚かな」なので誤り。first meant "pleasant" and later "foolish"(順序が逆)は前後関係のすり替え。a Latin word meaning "kind"(「親切な」の意味のラテン語)は not knowing と違う。
【覚える】only+副詞句が文頭→倒置:only over many centuries did it come to mean。 - 4During outbreaks of plague, ships arriving in Venice were sometimes required to wait forty days before their passengers could go ashore. The word "quarantine" comes from the Italian for "forty days."
答えc The word "quarantine" originally referred to a period of time.
訳本文:ペストが流行したとき、ベネチアに着いた船は、乗客が上陸できるまで40日間待つよう求められることがあった。quarantine(検疫・隔離)という語は、「40日間」を意味するイタリア語から来ている。
答:quarantine という語は、もとは期間を表していた。解説語源が「40日間」なので、もとは期間を表す語だった=originally referred to a period of time。first used as the name of a type of ship(船の種類の名前)は本文にない。allowed to land after four days(4日後に上陸できた)は forty days(40日)の数字ずれ。comes from Latin rather than Italian(イタリア語ではなくラテン語から)は from the Italian と矛盾する。
【覚える】quarantine=検疫・隔離(コロナ禍で頻出)。refer to=〜を指す。 - 5"December" comes from the Latin decem, meaning "ten." It is now the twelfth month because the early Roman calendar began in March.
答えd December was the tenth month in the early Roman calendar.
訳本文:December(12月)は、「10」を意味するラテン語 decem から来ている。それが今は12番目の月なのは、初期のローマの暦が3月から始まっていたからだ。
答:December は初期のローマ暦では10番目の月だった。解説3月始まりの暦なら、3月から数えて10番目が December になる。よって December was the tenth month in the early Roman calendar.。has always been the last month(ずっと最後の月)は誤り。decem means "twelve"(decem は12)は ten と違う。began in January(1月始まり)は began in March と逆。October(octo=8)、September(septem=7)も同じ2か月のずれ。
【覚える】deca-/decem=10:decade(10年)、decimal(十進法の)。 - 6Many people think that SOS stands for "Save Our Souls." In fact, it is not short for anything. It was chosen because its Morse code, three dots, three dashes and three dots, is easy to send and to recognize.
答えc SOS was chosen for its simple Morse code pattern.
訳本文:SOS は Save Our Souls(われらの魂を救え)の略だと多くの人が思っている。実は、SOS は何の略でもない。選ばれたのは、モールス信号で「トン3つ・ツー3つ・トン3つ」となり、送りやすく聞き分けやすいからだ。
答:SOS は、モールス信号の型が単純なので選ばれた。解説it is not short for anything(何の略でもない)、選ばれた理由は信号の形が打ちやすく聞き取りやすいから=SOS was chosen for its simple Morse code pattern.。originally meant "Save Our Ship"(もとは Save Our Ship の意味)と "Save Our Souls" was the original meaning は「何の略でもない」に反する。difficult to recognize(聞き分けにくい)は easy to recognize と逆。
【覚える】Many people think 〜. In fact, 〜=俗説を正す流れ。答えは In fact の後。 - 7Of the many theories about the origin of "OK," the most widely accepted one traces it to a Boston newspaper in 1839, where it appeared as a joking abbreviation of "oll korrect," a deliberate misspelling of "all correct."
答えa According to the most accepted theory, "OK" began as a joke in a newspaper.
訳本文:OK の起源には多くの説があるが、最も広く受け入れられている説では、1839年のボストンの新聞にさかのぼる。そこで OK は、all correct(すべて正しい)をわざと書き間違えた oll korrect の冗談の略語として登場したという。
答:最も広く受け入れられている説によると、OK は新聞の冗談として始まった。解説joking abbreviation(冗談の略語)の言い換えで、According to the most accepted theory, "OK" began as a joke in a newspaper.。a word from another language(外国語の語の短縮形)は本文にない。first used in London(ロンドンで初めて使われた)は Boston の地名ずれ。Everyone agrees(全員が同意している)は、the most widely accepted(最も広く受け入れられた)が他の説の存在を含むので言い過ぎ。
【覚える】trace A to B=Aの起源をBにたどる。 - 8Words for tea around the world fall roughly into two groups. Languages that received tea by sea, largely through Dutch traders, tend to use forms like "tea," while those that received it over land tend to use forms like "cha."
答えb How tea reached a region tends to be reflected in the word used there.
訳本文:世界の「茶」を表す語は、おおまかに2つのグループに分かれる。主にオランダの商人を通じて海路で茶を受け取った言語は tea のような形を使う傾向があり、一方、陸路で受け取った言語は cha のような形を使う傾向がある。
答:茶がどのようにその地域に届いたかが、そこで使われる語に表れる傾向がある。解説海の道なら tea 系、陸の道なら cha 系=伝わり方が語に表れる、なので How tea reached a region tends to be reflected in the word used there.。All languages use "cha"(すべての言語が cha 系)は2グループと矛盾。Dutch traders brought tea over land(オランダ商人が陸路で運んだ)は by sea と逆。invented in England(英国で作られた)は本文にない。roughly・tend to と控えめなので例外はある。
【覚える】fall into=〜に分かれる。tend to=〜する傾向がある。 - 9The word "robot" first appeared in a 1920 play by a Czech writer. It comes from a Czech word meaning "forced labor."
答えb The word "robot" was originally connected with the idea of work.
訳本文:robot という語は、1920年にチェコの作家が書いた戯曲で初めて登場した。「強制労働」を意味するチェコ語から来ている。
答:robot という語は、もとは労働という概念と結びついていた。解説forced labor(強制労働)から来ているので、仕事の概念と結びついていた=The word "robot" was originally connected with the idea of work.。invented by an engineer(技術者が作った)は、生まれたのはチェコの作家の戯曲なので誤り。a word meaning "machine"(「機械」の意味の語)は本文にない。a novel written in English(英語の小説)は a play by a Czech writer(チェコの作家の戯曲)と違う。
【覚える】labor=労働。play=戯曲(novel=小説と区別)。
Ⅱ 次の英文を読み、設問に答えよ
Have you ever heard that the word "posh" comes from "Port Out, Starboard Home," supposedly stamped on the tickets of wealthy passengers sailing between Britain and India? Or that "golf" stands for "Gentlemen Only, Ladies Forbidden"? Stories like these are entertaining, but linguists treat them with great ( 1 ). (A) The main reason is historical. (B) The habit of forming new words from the first letters of other words, as in NASA or UNESCO, became common only in the twentieth century. (C) "Golf," for example, appears in Scottish records from the fifteenth century, long before such words were common. (D) Any story claiming that a much older word began as an acronym should therefore make us suspicious.(ア) Of course, some word histories can be confirmed. "OK," for instance, has been traced to a specific newspaper published in 1839.

- 10Choose the best word for ( 1 ).
答えc suspicion
訳問:( 1 )に入る最も適切な語を選べ。
答:suspicion(疑い)解説entertaining, but(おもしろいが)の後なのでマイナスの評価が来る。続く「頭字語の習慣は20世紀から」が疑う理由で、下線部(ア)の suspicious(疑わしく思う)とも対応するので suspicion(疑い)。treat A with suspicion で「Aを疑ってかかる」。confidence(信頼)、pride(誇り)、delight(喜び)はプラスの語で but と合わない。
【覚える】treat A with suspicion=Aを疑いの目で見る。 - 11次の英文を入れるのに最も適切な位置を、本文の (A)〜(D) から選べ。 Before then, words of this kind were very rare in English.
答えc (C)
訳挿入文:それ以前は、この種の語は英語ではごくまれだった。
答:(C)解説Before then の then は「20世紀」、words of this kind(この種の語)は「頭文字から作った語」を指す。どちらも (B) の文(頭字語の習慣が一般的になったのは20世紀から)の中にあるので、その直後の (C)。さらに続く golf の例(15世紀=頭字語がまれな時代)にも自然につながる。(A) や (B) の位置では then が何を指すか不明、(D) では golf の例の後で流れが切れる。
【覚える】挿入問題は then/this/such などの指示語の指す先を探す。 - 12Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined sentence (ア)?
答えd If an old word is said to come from an acronym, we should doubt the story.
訳問:下線部(ア)に意味が最も近いものはどれか。
答:古い語が頭字語から来ていると言われたら、その話を疑うべきだ。解説下線部は「ずっと古い語が頭字語から始まったという話は疑うべきだ」の意味。acronym(頭字語)→an acronym、suspicious→doubt の言い換えで If an old word is said to come from an acronym, we should doubt the story.。All acronyms are older than the 20th century(頭字語はみな20世紀より古い)・Old words were usually formed from first letters(古い語はふつう頭文字から)は逆。never believe any story(一切信じるな)は言い過ぎ。
【覚える】acronym=頭字語。be suspicious of=〜を疑う。 - 13Why does the author mention "OK" at the end of the passage?
答えc To show that some word histories can be confirmed by evidence
訳問:筆者が本文の最後で OK に触れているのはなぜか。
答:証拠で確かめられる語源もあることを示すため解説Of course(もちろん)で譲歩し、for instance(たとえば)で OK を例に挙げている。資料で年代まで確かめられる語源もある、という補足なので To show that some word histories can be confirmed by evidence。another example of a false story(作り話の別の例)は逆。an acronym from the fifteenth century(15世紀の頭字語)は本文にない。newspapers often invent new words(新聞はよく新語を作る)も言い過ぎ。
【覚える】Of course 〜, for instance …=譲歩+例。 - 14According to the passage, which of the following is true?
答えa The word "golf" was in use long before acronyms became common.
訳問:本文によれば、正しいものはどれか。
答:golf という語は、頭字語が一般的になるずっと前から使われていた。解説golf は15世紀の記録にあり、頭字語が広まった20世紀よりずっと前なので一致。"Posh" certainly comes from 〜(posh は確かに〜から来た)は、本文が supposedly(〜だと言われている)付きの話として疑っているので逆。NASA is one of the oldest acronyms(NASA は最古の頭字語の一つ)は本文にない。Linguists enjoy spreading stories(言語学者は話を広めるのを楽しむ)は「疑ってかかる」と逆。
【覚える】supposedly=(真偽はともかく)〜だとされている。
Ⅲ 語源を手がかりに、空所に入る最も適切なものを選べ
- 15com- means "together" and the Latin panis means "bread." A companion was originally someone who .
答えa shared bread with you
訳com- は「共に」、ラテン語の panis は「パン」を意味する。companion(仲間)は、もとは自分とパンを分け合う人のことだった。
解説com(共に)+panis(パン)=パンを共にする人なので shared bread with you(あなたとパンを分け合った)。baked bread for you(あなたのためにパンを焼いた)、sold bread at a market(市場でパンを売った)は together の意味がなく、refused to eat with you(いっしょに食べるのを拒んだ)は逆。company(仲間・会社)も同じ語源。
【覚える】com-/con-=共に:companion, company, connect。 - 16compassion comes from com- ("together") and a root meaning "suffer." It most nearly means .
答えd sympathy for the suffering of others
訳compassion(思いやり)は、com-(共に)と「苦しむ」を意味する語根から来ている。その意味に最も近いのは、他人の苦しみへの同情である。
解説「共に苦しむ」→他人の苦しみに寄り添う=sympathy for the suffering of others(他人の苦しみへの同情)。a strong desire to win(勝ちたいという強い欲求)は passion(情熱)に引かれた誤答。the ability to remember things(記憶力)、anger at an unfair decision(不当な決定への怒り)は語源と合わない。passion も元は「苦しみ」の意味(the Passion=キリストの受難)。
【覚える】sym-(共に)+pathy(感情)=sympathy も同じ発想。 - 17In "breakfast," fast means "a period of going without food." Breakfast is therefore the meal that .
答えc ends the fast of the night
訳breakfast の fast は「食べ物を断つ期間」を意味する。だから breakfast は、夜の間の断食を終わらせる食事である。
解説break(破る・終わらせる)+fast(断食)=夜の間の断食を終える食事なので ends the fast of the night。is eaten very quickly(急いで食べる)は fast を「速い」と読んだ多義語の罠。is often skipped(よく抜かれる)は語源と無関係。is eaten during a long fast(長い断食中に食べる)は「断食を破る」と矛盾。
【覚える】fast(名・動)断食(する)。break the ice=場をなごませる、の break も「破る」。 - 18astronaut comes from astro- ("star") and naut ("sailor"). Which word shares the root meaning "star"?
答えb asteroid
訳astronaut(宇宙飛行士)は astro-(星)と naut(船乗り)から来ている。「星」を意味する語根を共有している語はどれか。答:asteroid(小惑星)
解説aster/astro は「星」なので asteroid(小惑星)が同じ仲間。astonish(驚かせる)は「雷に打たれる」を意味する語から来ていて、見た目が似ているだけ。nautical(航海の)は naut(船乗り)の側の仲間。assist(手伝う)は as-(そばに)+sist(立つ)で無関係。disaster(悪い星回り=災害)、astronomy(天文学)も星の仲間。
【覚える】astro/aster=星:astronaut, asteroid, disaster, astronomy。 - 19"Eleven" and "twelve" come from old Germanic words meaning "one left over" and "two left over" after counting ten. This explains why they .
答えc do not end in -teen
訳eleven と twelve は、10を数えたあとの「1つ余り」「2つ余り」を意味する古いゲルマン語から来ている。このことは、なぜそれらが -teen で終わらないのかを説明している。
解説「10数えて1つ余り・2つ余り」という別の作りなので、thirteen 以降の「3+10」型の -teen がつかない。よって do not end in -teen。are spelled with "v" and "w"(v と w でつづる)は語源と関係ない。come from Latin(ラテン語から)は Germanic(ゲルマン語)と矛盾。are used only in Britain(英国でしか使わない)も誤り。
【覚える】-teen=+10(thirteen=3+10)。left over=余った。 - 20The word "silly" once meant "blessed" or "happy." Its meaning has changed .
答えa from a positive one to a negative one
訳silly という語は、かつては「祝福された」「幸せな」という意味だった。その意味は、良い意味から悪い意味へと変わった。
解説「祝福された・幸せな」(プラス)→「ばかな」(マイナス)と変化したので from a positive one to a negative one。very little(ほとんど変わっていない)は大きな変化と矛盾。from a negative one to a positive one(悪→良)は向きが逆で、それは nice(無知な→すてきな)の例。borrowed from Japanese(日本語から借りた)は無関係。
【覚える】意味の悪化:silly(幸せな→ばかな)/意味の向上:nice(愚かな→すてきな)。
Ⅳ 空所に入る最も適切な語句を選べ
- 21The English word , meaning "a powerful businessperson," comes from a Japanese title that was once used for the shogun in dealings with foreigners.
答えc tycoon
訳「強力な実業家」を意味する英語の tycoon は、かつて外国との交渉で将軍に使われた日本の称号から来ている。
解説「大物実業家」で、将軍の外交上の称号「大君(たいくん)」が語源なので tycoon。honcho(ボス・責任者)も日本語の「班長」由来だが、将軍の呼び名ではない。tsunami(津波)、emoji(絵文字)も日本語由来の英語だが意味が合わない。meaning 〜(〜を意味する)は前の名詞を後ろから説明する分詞。
【覚える】日本語由来の英語:tycoon, honcho, tsunami, emoji, karaoke。 - 22Long ago, "a napron" was heard as "," and that is how the modern word was born.
答えd an apron
訳大昔、a napron は an apron と聞き取られ、そうして今の apron(エプロン)という語が生まれた。
解説a napron の n が冠詞の側に移って an apron になった(異分析)。napkin(ナプキン)と同じ仲間の語。a nap(昼寝)、a pron は語として成り立たず、an napron は n が二重になるだけで変化の説明にならない。逆に an ekename → a nickname は、n が後ろの語に移った例。
【覚える】異分析:a napron→an apron/an ekename→a nickname。 - 23Many people believe that "emoji" is related to "emotion," but the similarity is .
答えc coincidental
訳emoji は emotion(感情)と関係があると多くの人が信じているが、似ているのは偶然である。
解説emoji は日本語の「絵+文字」で、emotion(感情)とは語源的に無関係。but の後なので、前の「信じられていること」を否定する語=coincidental(偶然の)。intentional(意図的な)は逆。official(公式の)、ancient(古代の)は文脈に合わない。Many people believe 〜, but … は俗説を正す典型の流れ。
【覚える】coincidence(偶然の一致)→coincidental(偶然の)。 - 24The abbreviation "e.g." means "for example," while "i.e." means "."
答えa that is
訳略語の e.g. は「たとえば」を意味し、一方 i.e. は「すなわち」を意味する。
解説e.g. はラテン語 exempli gratia(例えば)、i.e. は id est(すなわち)で that is(つまり)。while(一方)の対比なので、e.g. と同じ意味の for instance(たとえば)は合わない。and so on(など)は etc.、note well(よく注意せよ)は N.B. の意味。論文や長文でよく出る略語。
【覚える】e.g.=for example、i.e.=that is、etc.=and so on、cf.=compare。
Ⅴ 設問に答えよ
- 25次の英文を和訳せよ。 Words do not keep their meanings forever; like the people who use them, they change over time.
【覚える】not … forever/not always=部分否定。
