In 1066, William, Duke of Normandy, defeated the English king Harold at the Battle of Hastings and became King of England. For the next few centuries, the ruling class spoke a form of French, while most ordinary people continued to speak English. As a result, thousands of French words entered the English language. This history can still be seen in the vocabulary of food. Words for living animals, such as cow, pig, and sheep, come from Old English, but the words for their meat, such as beef, pork, and mutton, come from French. A popular explanation is that English-speaking farmers raised the animals, while French-speaking nobles ate the meat.

cow(牛)、pig(豚)、sheep(羊)のような生きた動物を表す語は古英語から来ているが、beef(牛肉)、pork(豚肉)、mutton(羊肉)のようなその肉を表す語はフランス語から来ている。

In the 1950s, many public places in the southern United States were segregated: Black and white people had to use separate schools, restaurants, and even drinking fountains. In 1955, Rosa Parks, a Black woman in Montgomery, Alabama, was arrested after she refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white passenger. Her arrest led to a bus boycott that lasted more than a year. The civil rights movement, in which Martin Luther King Jr. became a leading figure, used nonviolent methods such as marches and boycotts, and it helped bring about the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Many people use the words England, Britain, and the United Kingdom as if they meant the same thing, but they do not. The United Kingdom is made up of four nations: England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Great Britain is the name of the largest of the British Isles, which contains England, Scotland, and Wales. In a 2016 referendum, a majority of voters in the UK chose to leave the European Union, a decision known as Brexit. The result was close, and voters in Scotland and Northern Ireland, unlike those in England and Wales, mostly voted to remain.

多くの人は、England(イングランド)、Britain(ブリテン)、the United Kingdom(連合王国)という言葉を同じ意味であるかのように使うが、実はそうではない。
