Many scientific names come from Greek and Roman myths. After a new planet was discovered in 1781, astronomers eventually named it Uranus, after the Greek god of the sky. Several years later, a German chemist discovered a new element and named it uranium in honor of the planet. The same pattern was repeated in the twentieth century: after the planets Neptune and Pluto, scientists named two new elements neptunium and plutonium. In this way, ancient stories have left their mark even on modern science.
