Many shoppers now carry reusable bags instead of taking plastic ones at the store. This seems like an obvious way to help the environment. However, making a reusable cotton bag requires much more energy and water than making a thin plastic bag. Some studies suggest that a cotton bag has to be used many times before it becomes the better choice. In other words, a reusable bag is only eco-friendly if it is actually reused. The lesson is not that we should go back to plastic bags, but that we should judge products by their whole life cycle, not by their image.

- 1What does the writer point out after "However"?
答えb A cotton bag may be worse for the environment unless it is used many times.
a cotton bag has to be used many times before it becomes the better choice を unless it is used many times と言いかえている。Plastic bags are always better は Some studies suggest の言い過ぎ。Most shoppers refuse to carry reusable bags Cotton bags cannot be reused は reusable と矛盾。
always/never/cannot の言い切りは疑う。
答えb the whole period from when a product is made until it is thrown away
the number of times a product is sold(売れた回数)、the time a shopper spends in a store(店にいる時間)、the speed … becomes popular(人気になる速さ)は意味が違う。
- 3The writer's main point is that .
答えc we should judge a product's environmental impact by looking at its whole life
解説最終文は not A but B(A ではなく B)で、B の「製品は一生全体で判断すべき」が主張。we should go back to using plastic bags(レジ袋に戻れ)は not の側で、筆者が否定している内容。cotton bags should be banned(綿の袋を禁止)、shoppers should stop buying new products(新製品を買うな)は本文にない。
The lesson is not A but B=教訓は A ではなく B。 B。 - 4Which of the following agrees with the passage?
答えa Producing a cotton bag uses more resources than producing a thin plastic bag.
解説more energy and water を more resources とまとめた言いかえ。All studies show … never the better choice は Some studies suggest と many times before it becomes the better choice の両方と矛盾。plastic bag requires more water image is the best way to judge は not by their image と逆。
Imagine a pasture that is open to all the farmers in a village. Each farmer gains by adding one more cow, because the extra cow brings him more milk and money, while the cost of the damaged grass is shared by everyone. If every farmer thinks this way, the pasture will eventually be destroyed, and all of them will lose. This idea, known as "the tragedy of the commons," was made famous by the ecologist Garrett Hardin in 1968. It helps explain problems such as overfishing and climate change, in which the oceans and the atmosphere act as shared resources. Many experts argue that such problems cannot be solved by goodwill alone; rules or agreements are needed.

- 5Why does each farmer want to add more cows?
答えb Because he receives the benefit himself, while the cost is shared by all
解説because the extra cow brings him more milk and money, while the cost of the damaged grass is shared by everyone を正確に言いかえたもの。 the village leader orders(村長の命令)、the grass grows faster(草が速く育つ)、the other farmers pay him(他の農民が金を払う)は本文にない。
答えd people's good intentions without any rules
the efforts of a single farmer(1人の農民の努力)は alone を「1人で」と誤解したもの。money from the government(政府のお金)、scientific research only(科学研究だけ)は対比と合わない。
【覚える】A alone=A だけで。not … alone; B is needed=A だけでは不十分で B が要る。 - 7According to the passage, which is a problem similar to the one in the village?
解説本文に problems such as overfishing and climate change とあり、海(漁業資源)が共有地にあたる。traffic accidents(交通事故)、rising food prices(食料価格の上昇)、unemployment(失業)は本文に挙がっていない。
There are two main ways to respond to climate change. Mitigation means reducing the emissions of greenhouse gases that cause global warming, for example by using renewable energy. Adaptation means preparing for the effects of warming that cannot be avoided, such as building higher sea walls or developing crops that can survive extreme heat. In the past, some people worried that talking about adaptation would make people less serious about cutting emissions. Today, however, since the planet has already warmed by more than 1°C compared with the late nineteenth century, most experts agree that both approaches are necessary.

- 8Which of the following is an example of adaptation?
答えd Growing a type of rice that can survive high temperatures
本文の developing crops that can survive extreme heat に当たる。Switching from coal power to solar power(石炭から太陽光へ)、Driving less and cycling more(車を減らし自転車を使う)、Putting a tax on carbon emissions(炭素税)は、どれも排出を減らす緩和(mitigation)の例。
- 9Why were some people once worried about talking about adaptation?
答えd They thought it might reduce efforts to cut emissions.
解説would make people less serious about cutting emissions の言いかえ。 They thought it would cost nothing(費用がかからない)、had already stopped(温暖化はもう止まった)、sea walls were too low(堤防が低すぎる)は本文にない。
【覚える】less serious about 〜=〜に真剣でなくなる=reduce efforts to 〜。 - 10Which of the following agrees with the passage?
答えa Most experts now think both mitigation and adaptation are needed.
解説最終文 most experts agree that both approaches are necessary と一致。only mitigation is needed は both と矛盾。warmed by more than 1°C since the year 2000 は、比較の基準は the late nineteenth century で、時のずれ。
- 11Forests and oceans act as carbon , absorbing large amounts of CO2 from the air.
absorbing large amounts of CO2 が決め手。carbon footprint(炭素の足跡)は「出す量」の側で逆。carbon tax(炭素税)、carbon neutral(排出実質ゼロ)は「森林や海」の働きではない。
- 12The company advertised its products as "green," but critics accused it of .
whitewash(ごまかす)のもじり。but critics accused it of 〜(〜だと非難した)から悪い意味の語が入る。recycling(リサイクル)は良い行為で非難の対象にならない。decoupling(経済成長と排出の切り離し)と adaptation(適応)も非難の内容にならない。
【覚える】accuse A of B=A を B のことで非難する。 - 13Scientists warn that if the ice sheets pass a certain point, the change may be impossible to reverse.
impossible to reverse(元に戻せない)がヒント。starting point(出発点)、selling point(売りになる点)、viewing point(見晴らし)は point と結びつくが、意味が合わない。
- 14Your carbon is the total amount of greenhouse gases produced by your activities.
the total amount of greenhouse gases produced が定義。sink(吸収源)は吸い込む側で逆。tax(税)、trade(取引)は「総量」の定義にならない。
- 15In a economy, products are repaired, reused, and recycled instead of being thrown away.
repaired, reused, and recycled instead of being thrown away が定義。 planned economy(計画経済)は社会主義の経済体制、shadow economy(地下経済)は非公式の経済。
- 16One cold winter does not disprove global warming, because refers to average conditions over a long period.
season(季節)と temperature(気温)は average conditions over a long period の定義に合わない。
MDGs(2000〜2015)の後継。
Climate change is a global problem that no country can solve alone.
Climate change is a worldwide problem that no single country can solve by itself. / … that cannot be solved by any one country alone.
Individual actions are important, but they are not enough without changes in policy.
解説採点ポイントは①Individual actions are important(個人の行動は大切)②but they are not enough(十分ではない)③without changes in policy(政策の変化がなければ)。別解:Individual actions matter, but they are not enough unless policies change. / … without policy changes.
A is important, but … not enough=譲歩+主張。
