- 1A: I think all students should study abroad.
B: but it's too expensive for many families.答えa That may be true,
That may be true, but 〜(そうかもしれないが〜)。 What's more,(そのうえ)と For one thing,(ひとつには)は理由を足す言葉で、but とつながらない。
That may be true, but 〜=譲歩→反論(本音は but の後)。 - 2A: We should ban smartphones at school.
B: I agree some extent. They can be distracting, but they're also useful for research.答えa to
解説to some extent で「ある程度は」なので前置詞は to。 (They can be distracting, but they're also useful)。in・at・on は extent と組まない。to a certain extent、up to a point
I agree to some extent.=ある程度は賛成(全面賛成ではない)。 - 3A: Why do you prefer trains to buses?
B: They're faster. they're more comfortable.答えd On top of that,
On the other hand,(一方で)は対比で、反対方向の内容が来る。 That's one way to look at it.(そういう見方もある)は相手への返事で、自分の理由を足す言葉ではない。
On top of that=What's more=Besides=そのうえ。 - 4Online shopping saves both time and money. I rarely go to stores anymore.
答えb That's why
【覚える】That's why+結論/That's because+理由(向きに注意)。 - 5A: Eating chocolate every day makes you smarter.
B: Really?答えd Do you have any evidence for that?
Do you have any evidence for that?。 I strongly believe that.(強く信じる)と That's why I'm for it.(だから賛成)は Really?
Do you have any evidence for that?=その根拠は? - 6A: We have too little time and too many tasks.
B: we should drop some of the tasks?
A: Exactly.答えb So what you're saying is
So what you're saying is 〜?(つまり〜ということ?)。 On top of that,(そのうえ)、For one thing,(ひとつには)、Even so,(それでも)は疑問文の確認にならない。
So what you're saying is 〜?=つまり〜ということですか(要約して確認)。 - 7(会議で)A: ...and so we decided to change the date of the event.
B: but can I add something?答えb Sorry to interrupt,
後ろの can I add something?(付け加えてもいい?)
【覚える】Sorry to interrupt, but 〜=お話中すみませんが〜。 - 8A: The weather forecast says it might rain tomorrow.
B: I think we should go hiking. We can bring umbrellas.答えd Even so,
- 9A: Is it better to study in the morning or at night?
B: Some people focus better in the morning, and others at night.答えc It depends on the person.
It depends on the person.(人による)。 That's why I study at night. I agree with you.
【覚える】It depends (on 〜).=(〜)しだいだ/Some 〜, and others …. - 10A: I still think cats are better pets than dogs.
B: And I still think dogs are better. Well,答えc let's agree to disagree.
you're absolutely right(まったくそのとおり)と we seem to agree on the main point(要点では一致している)は意見が一致したときの言葉で矛盾する。that's why I'm for it.(だから賛成だ)も合わない。
- 11A: I think the plan has some problems.
B: What kind of problems are you talking about?答えb Could you elaborate on that?
What kind of problems are you talking about?(どんな問題?) Could you elaborate on that?。That's partly true.(一部はそうだ)、Let's agree to disagree.(意見の違いを認めよう)、To sum up, it's perfect.(まとめると完璧だ)は質問とつながらない。
Could you elaborate on that?=もう少し詳しく話してもらえますか。
- 12A: I think smartphones should be allowed in class. We can look up information quickly.
B: I see your point, but many students would just play games. I'd have to disagree with you there.
解説I see your point(言い分はわかる)は譲歩で、本音は but の後。I'd have to disagree with you there.(その点は反対せざるを得ない)は控えめだがはっきりした反対なので「授業でのスマホ使用に反対」。
I see your point, but 〜=本音は but の後。 - 13A: School uniforms are a waste of money.
B: I agree to some extent. Some uniforms are really expensive. Even so, they save time in the morning, so I think they're worth it.
I think they're worth it.(その価値がある)が結論なので「制服には価値がある」。 Some uniforms are really expensive
I agree to some extent. Even so, 〜=一部認めて、主張は Even so の後。 - 14A: Everyone should go to university.
B: That's not always the case. Some people learn better by working.
Some people learn better by working
【覚える】not always=必ずしも〜ない(部分否定)/That's not always the case. - 15A: Our town doesn't need a new library.
B: With all due respect, I disagree. The old one is too small for all the students who use it.
解説With all due respect(お言葉ですが)は丁寧な前置きだが、後ろには I disagree.
- 16A: Video games are a total waste of time.
B: That's one way to look at it. Some games actually help you learn.
That's one way to look at it. (Some games actually help you learn.)
That's one way to look at it.=そういう見方もある(やんわり反対)。
- 17According to me(A), the new rule is unfair(B) because it ignores(C) the opinions of(D) students.
答えa (A)
According to me を In my opinion に直す。 unfair(不公平な)、ignores(主語 it に合う3単現)、the opinions of students は正しい。
【覚える】In my opinion,=私の考えでは/according to 〜=(他者)によれば。 - 18I completely agree(A) your opinion, but I have(B) some concerns(C) about(D) the cost.
答えa (A)
解説人・意見に賛成するのは agree with 〜 なので、agree your opinion を agree with your opinion に直す。 have some concerns about 〜(〜について心配がある)は正しい形で、have・concerns・about に誤りはない。
【覚える】agree with+人・意見/agree to+提案/agree on+議題。 - 19Do you have(A) any(B) evidences(C) for(D) that?
数えるときは a piece of evidence。 evidence for 〜(〜の証拠)の for も正しい。
【覚える】evidence(不可算)/a piece of evidence=証拠1つ。 - 20What exactly(A) do you mean(B) with(C) that(D)?
解説mean A by B で「BでAを意味する」なので、前置詞は with ではなく by。What do you mean by that? exactly(正確に)の位置、mean(動詞の原形)、that(相手の発言)は正しい。
What do you mean by that?=それはどういう意味?
- 21As far as I'm , homework should be optional.

【覚える】If you ask me,=私に言わせれば(口語)。 - 23I prefer cycling to school. For one , it's cheaper. For another, it's good exercise.
prefer A to B(BよりAを好む)も確認。
For one thing, 〜. - 24From my point of , online classes have many advantages.
解説from 〜's point of view で「〜の立場・見方から」なので view を入れる。 from the student's point of view(生徒の立場から)のように他者の視点にも使える。
【覚える】from my point of view=私の見方では。 - 25I understand where you're coming , but I see it differently.
答えfrom
解説where you're coming from は「(あなたの)考えの出どころ・背景」なので from を入れる。I understand where you're coming from, but 〜 は譲歩してから but で反論する型。I see it differently.(私は違う見方をしている)が本音。
I understand where you're coming from, but 〜=気持ちはわかるが〜。 - 26To sum , both sides have good points.
答えup
解説sum up は「要約する」で、To sum up,(まとめると)なので up を入れる。 both sides have good points(どちらにも良い点がある)とまとめる議論の終わり方。
To sum up,=In short,=まとめると。 - 27We keep going around in circles. Let's look at it from a different .
議論が go around in circles(堂々めぐり)のときに、look at it from a different angle(別の角度から見る)と視点を変える一言。
【覚える】from a different angle=from a different perspective=別の観点から。

The main reason is that it saves time.
The main reason is that it saves time.。The reason is that 〜 の形で、because でなく that を使うのが英作文では安全(The reason is because 〜 は避けたい)。
