- 1W: Did you hear back from the publisher about your novel? / M: They liked it, but they're cutting back on new authors this year. My agent's going to send it to a few smaller firms, though she admits it's a long shot. / W: Well, I hope one of them says yes. / Question: What does the man's agent think?
答えd The novel has little chance of being accepted.
The novel has little chance of being accepted.(採用の見込みは低い)が言い換え。The publisher will accept the novel next year.(来年採用する)は話に出ていない。The man should stop writing novels.(執筆をやめるべき)は言い過ぎ。
【覚える】a long shot=望み薄/a sure thing=確実なこと。 - 2M: Should we hire a caterer for Ms. Lee's retirement party, or just order pizza? / W: A caterer would be nicer, but our budget's tight. / M: What if we asked everyone to bring a dish? / W: Hmm, people are pretty busy at the end of the month. Let's just go with pizza, and we can get a nice cake from the bakery downstairs. / M: Fine by me. / Question: What will the speakers probably do?
答えa Order pizza and buy a cake.
Let's just go with pizza(ピザにしよう)→ Fine by me(それでいい)にあり、ケーキも買うと言っている。Hire a caterer(仕出し業者を雇う)は予算が厳しくて消えた案。 Move the party to the end of the month(パーティーを月末に移す)は end of the month という語だけを借りた誤答。
Let's just 〜 / go with 〜 で探す。 - 3W: How did your presentation to the board go? / M: Oh, it went great. The projector died five minutes in, and then the CEO asked me about figures I'd never even seen. / W: Ouch. Well, at least it's over. / Question: What does the man imply?
答えa His presentation did not go well.
解説it went great(最高だった)は皮肉。 His presentation did not go well.(うまくいかなかった)が正解。The CEO was impressed by his figures.(CEOが数字に感心した)は逆。He enjoyed giving the presentation.(楽しんだ)は皮肉を文字どおりに取った誤答。
Perfect.)。 - 4M: Are you going to apply for the manager position? / W: I wouldn't rule it out, but I've got a lot on my plate with the Henderson account right now. / M: The deadline's not until next month. / W: True. Let me see how things go after the client meeting. / Question: What does the woman imply?
答えb She may apply for the position later.
I wouldn't rule it out(その可能性は排除しない)+ Let me see how things go after the client meeting(打ち合わせの後で考える)から、She may apply for the position later.(後で応募するかもしれない)。She has already applied(もう応募した)は誤り。She has decided not to apply(応募しないと決めた)は rule out を逆に読んだ誤答。
【覚える】rule out=除外する/have a lot on one's plate=やることが山ほどある。 - 5M: The figures in this report don't add up. Sales are supposed to be up 10 percent, but total revenue is lower than last quarter. / W: Maybe the accounting team used last year's exchange rates. I'll check with them before we send it to the director. / Question: What will the woman do next?
答えb Contact the accounting team.
I'll check with them(経理チームに確かめる)を抽象化した Contact the accounting team.(経理チームに連絡する)が正解。Send the report to the director.(部長に報告書を送る)は before 以下で「確認の後」の行動なので「次」ではない。Correct the sales figures herself.(自分で直す)と Lower the sales target.(目標を下げる)は言っていない。
A before B は A が先。 - 6M: We've spent six months on this app, and the number of downloads is still tiny. / W: I know it's painful, but maybe we should cut our losses and move the team to the payment project instead. / M: I suppose you're right. Let's tell the director tomorrow. / Question: What do the speakers decide to do?
答えa Stop working on the app.
I suppose you're right と同意したので Stop working on the app.(アプリの開発をやめる)。Spend more money advertising the app.(宣伝費を増やす)と Ask the director for six more months.(さらに6か月もらう)は続ける方向で逆。Hire a new team for the payment project.(新しいチームを雇う)は誤りで、今のチームを移すと言っている。
【覚える】cut one's losses=損切りする/throw good money after bad=損の上塗りをする。
(A) City Songbirds / For a long time, scientists assumed that the songs of a given bird species varied little from place to place. Recent studies, however, have shown that some birds living in cities sing at a noticeably higher pitch than members of the same species in forests. The most likely explanation is traffic noise. Because the low rumble of cars and buses drowns out low-pitched sounds, birds that sing higher are more easily heard by potential mates and rivals. Yet this adjustment may come at a cost. Some researchers suggest that females of certain species prefer males with deeper songs, which may signal a larger body size. If so, city birds could be forced to choose between being heard and being attractive. Whether this trade-off affects their long-term breeding success remains unclear. / (B) The Secret of Roman Concrete / Many Roman structures, such as harbors and domes, have survived for around two thousand years, while much modern concrete begins to crumble within decades. Small white lumps of lime found throughout Roman concrete were traditionally dismissed as evidence of careless mixing or poor-quality materials. A recent study, however, suggests that these lumps may have played an important role. When cracks formed and water seeped in, the lime could dissolve and then harden again, effectively filling the gaps. Engineers are now exploring whether a similar approach could make modern concrete more durable, although it is too early to say whether it would be practical on a large scale.

- 7(A) What have recent studies shown?
答えd Some city birds sing at higher pitches than forest birds of the same species.
The songs of a bird species never change(決して変わらない)は前半の「かつての通説」をさらに強めたもので、研究結果とは逆。City birds sing more loudly(より大きな声で)は pitch(音の高さ)を loudness(音の大きさ)にすり替えた誤答。Traffic noise has caused some birds to stop singing(鳴くのをやめた)は言っていない。
- 8(A) What does the speaker say about singing at a higher pitch?
答えa It may make males less attractive to some females.
It has been proven to reduce breeding success.(繁殖成功を下げると証明された)は、本文の remains unclear(わかっていない)と矛盾する言い過ぎ。 It causes females to prefer city males.(メスが都会のオスを好む)は逆。
- 9(B) What was traditionally believed about the white lumps?
答えc They showed that the concrete had been poorly made.
解説were traditionally dismissed as evidence of careless mixing or poor-quality materials(ずさんな混ぜ方や質の悪い材料の証拠として片づけられた)の言い換えが正解。They made the concrete stronger over time.(時とともに強くした)と They were added on purpose to repair cracks.(ひびを直すために加えた)は新しい研究寄りの見方で、時間の軸がずれている。They were caused by water damage.(水の害でできた)は本文にない。
dismiss A as B=AをBだとして片づける。 - 10(B) What does the speaker say about using the Roman method today?
答えc It is uncertain whether it could be used widely.
解説it is too early to say whether it would be practical on a large scale(大規模に実用的かどうか言うのはまだ早い)の言い換えで、It is uncertain whether it could be used widely. Engineers have already replaced modern concrete with it.(すでに置き換えた)と It has made modern concrete last longer(長持ちさせた)は exploring(検討中)を完了扱いした言い過ぎ。It is too expensive for researchers to study.(高すぎる)は費用の話で出ていない。
【覚える】too early to say=まだ何とも言えない=uncertain。
Question:What should you do first? / (放送)Attention, passengers on Flight 208 to Vancouver. Due to a mechanical problem, this flight has been canceled. All passengers will be rebooked automatically on the next available flight, which departs tomorrow at 7:15 a.m. Your new boarding pass will be sent by email. Checked baggage will be transferred to the new flight, so there is no need to collect it. If you would prefer a later flight, please speak to an agent at Counter 12. Passengers who need overnight accommodation should first go to the service desk next to Gate 5 to receive a hotel voucher.
答えd Go to the service desk near Gate 5.
宿泊が必要な人は first go to the service desk next to Gate 5。Collect your bag は no need to collect と矛盾。Speak to an agent at Counter 12(12番カウンターへ)は遅い便を望む人向け。Check your email for a hotel reservation
Question:Which class should you take? / (放送)Thank you for calling Greenfield Fitness. Here's our yoga schedule. Our Beginners' Flow class meets on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 10. For those who already have some experience, Power Yoga runs on Monday and Wednesday evenings at 7. If you're new to yoga but can only come after work, our Gentle Start class meets on Friday evenings at 7:30. Finally, Weekend Stretch is open to all levels on Saturday afternoons.
If you're new to yoga but can only come after work
For those who 〜 / If you're 〜 は対象を絞る枝。
Interviewer: Today we're talking with Dr. Lena Ortiz, who restores coral reefs. Dr. Ortiz, how did you get started in this field? / Ortiz: Well, I actually trained as an architect. I was designing hotels along the coast when I took up diving, and I was shocked by how much of the reef had already died. So I went back to university to study marine biology. / Interviewer: What's the biggest challenge in your work now? / Ortiz: People often assume the hardest part is growing the coral. That's tricky, of course. But what I've found is that the real challenge is getting local communities involved. If fishermen and hotel owners don't see the benefits, a restored reef can be damaged again within a few years. So these days, I spend as much time in village meetings as I do underwater.

- 13What led Dr. Ortiz to change careers?
答えb She saw how badly a reef had been damaged while diving.
I was shocked by how much of the reef had already died(サンゴ礁がどれほど死んでいるかに衝撃を受けた)を言い換えた選択肢が正解。 She was unable to find work as an architect.(仕事がなかった)は言っていない。
- 14What does Dr. Ortiz say is the main challenge in her work?
答えb Gaining the support of local people.
解説People often assume 〜(一般にはそう思われがち)→ But what I've found is 〜(実は)の流れで、本音は後半の getting local communities involved(地域の人々に関わってもらう)。 Gaining the support of local people. Finding money for diving trips(資金集め)と Teaching architects(建築家に教える)は話に出ていない。
People often assume A. But B.
- 15That proposal has been put on the back burner.
答えc It is not a priority at the moment.
It is not a priority at the moment.(今は優先事項ではない)が同じ意味。It has been rejected completely.(完全に却下された)は、保留と却下を混同した誤答で、提案は消えていない。It is being discussed urgently.(緊急に議論中)は逆。It has been passed to another team.(別チームに回された)は言っていない。
【覚える】on the back burner=後回し/on the front burner=最優先。 - 16I'd take those survey results with a grain of salt.

The speaker doubts that the results are reliable.(信頼性を疑っている)が正解。The speaker thinks the results are very important.(とても重要だと思う)と The speaker agrees completely with the results.(全面的に同意)は逆。repeat the survey(やり直したい)までは言っていない。
【覚える】take 〜 with a grain of salt=割り引いて聞く(英 with a pinch of salt)。 - 17The new app never really caught on.
答えd It did not become popular.

【覚える】catch on=流行る/catch on (to 〜)=(〜を)理解する、の2つの意味。 - 18Let's not jump the gun.
答えa We should not act too soon.
Let's not jump the gun. We should not act too soon. We should move faster.(もっと急ぐべき)は逆。 We should not take any risks.(一切リスクを取るな)は言い過ぎ。
- 19Don't worry about the argument we had last year. That's water under the bridge.
答えb It no longer matters.
It is still a serious problem.(まだ深刻な問題だ)と It should be discussed again.(もう一度話し合うべき)は逆。
