「勉強しているあいだ、ラジオをつけておくのが好きです」。英語にすると、during I study … と書きたくなりませんか。じつはこれは間違いです。during と while は、どちらも「〜のあいだ」なのに、うしろに置ける形がちがいます。今日は、この使い分けを AI と練習するプロンプトを3本用意しました。
Cambridge Dictionary｜Conjunctions: timeは、よくある間違いとしてこの形を挙げています。
・✕ I like to have the radio on during I study.
・○ I like to have the radio on while I study.：勉強しているあいだは、ラジオをつけておくのが好きです
同じページによると、during は前置詞で、接続詞ではありません。うしろには名詞か代名詞を置きます。while は接続詞なので、うしろに主語と動詞を置けます。

うしろに来るものを並べると、こうです。
・You are not allowed to use your mobile phone during class.：授業中は携帯電話を使ってはいけません（during のうしろは名詞）
・While I was waiting for the bus, I phoned some friends.：バスを待っているあいだに、友達に電話した（while のうしろは主語と動詞）
同じページは、During I was waiting for the bus … を典型的な間違いとして挙げています。during のうしろに、主語と動詞は置けません。
「4年間」は during ではなく for
同じページによると、数と時間の長さを言うときは、during ではなく for を使います。
- ・○ They lived in Edinburgh for four years.：彼らは4年間エジンバラに住んでいた
- ・✕ They lived in Edinburgh during four years.
「〜のあいだ」と日本語で考えると、during を選びたくなります。うしろが「3日」「2時間」「4年」のような長さなら for です。
ただし、the first や the last が付くと during が使えます。例は I haven't done any exercise during the last week.（この1週間、運動を何もしていない）です。
during は「ずっと」も「そのあいだのどこかで」も表す

1. その時間のあいだずっと：I have to have my window open during the night.（夜のあいだずっと、窓を開けておかなければならない）
2. そのあいだのどこかで：What was that noise I heard during the night, I wonder?（夜中に聞こえたあの音は何だったんだろう）
1つ目の意味では、during はしばしば in と同じ意味になります。例は during the summer と in the summer です。2つ目の意味では、in より during のほうがよく使われます。
どちらの意味でも、うしろに置くのは名詞です。意味で迷っても、うしろの形を見れば during か while かは決められます。
⚠️ 使うときの注意
⚠️ Cambridge Dictionary｜Conjunctions: timeによると、while のような時を表す接続詞は、主語と動詞のかわりに -ing 形や -ed 形を続けることもあります。AI に while waiting と直されても、それが間違いだったとは限りません。ただし during I was … のように、during のうしろに主語と動詞を置く形は間違いです。迷ったら、while のうしろに主語と動詞をはっきり書くのが安全です。
during のうしろは名詞、while のうしろは主語と動詞。「3日間」「4年間」のような長さは for。見るところはこの3つです。まずは1本目のプロンプトで、きのうの「〜のあいだ」を5文書いて直してもらってください。そして、I listened to music while I was waiting for the bus. を声に出して3回言ってください。
