Initially, peach bows and reed arrows were used to ward off demons, but bean-throwing spread from the Muromachi period and became popular among the common people.
The bean-throwing, known as “bean throwing ceremony,” involves chanting “Oni wa soto, fuku wa uchi” while scattering roasted soybeans to drive away demons symbolizing evil and pray for good health. Beans are believed to have protective powers, and people eat as many as their age. While English-speaking countries lack similar rituals, it’s akin to the concept of “exorcism.”
