WPM = 語数 ÷ 読むのにかかった秒数 × 60 × 正解数 ÷ 設問数
※読んだ内容の理解を測定せずただ英文を読むスピードをチェックしたい場合は、WPM = 語数 ÷ 読むのにかかった秒数 × 60 まででOK。
Does Dark Chocolate Hold the Key to Slower Ageing?
Many people enjoy dark chocolate because of its rich taste, but new research suggests it might also help us stay biologically younger. The main suspect is theobromine, a natural chemical that is found in cocoa beans and therefore in dark chocolate. Scientists at University College London measured theobromine in the blood of 500 female twins and compared the levels with “epigenetic clocks”, a tool that shows whether a person’s body is ageing faster or slower than normal.
The results were striking. Women with higher amounts of theobromine tended to have a biological age that was lower than their real age. A second study of more than 1000 people in Germany showed the same pattern. This link, the researchers say, makes theobromine a promising anti-ageing candidate.
However, the story is not so simple. Dark chocolate contains many other substances, including sugar and fat, which could cancel any positive effect. In addition, some experts think theobromine might need help from other plant chemicals called polyphenols to work well.
Another open question is where the theobromine really comes from. It can appear when the body breaks down caffeine, but the biggest source in most diets is cocoa. Milk chocolate has much less theobromine, and white chocolate has none.
The scientists stress that their study does not prove that eating more chocolate will make you live longer. They call for larger, long-term trials to test the idea safely. Until then, moderation remains the smartest choice. (250 words)
