Instant Ramen Day and the Story of Momofuku Ando
On August 25, we celebrate “Instant Ramen Day.” It marks the invention of instant noodles by Nissin Foods in 1958. The first product was “Chicken Ramen.” Its creator, Momofuku Ando, was born in Taiwan and later became a Japanese citizen. After World War II, Japan faced food shortages, and many people went hungry. Ando wanted to make food that was tasty, safe, cheap, easy to prepare, and long-lasting. These five goals guided his work.
He began experiments in a small hut in Osaka. He tried hundreds of times but failed again and again. One day, he saw his wife frying tempura. He noticed that hot oil quickly removed water from food. This gave him a new idea. He invented the “flash-frying” method, which dried noodles completely. With this method, noodles could be stored for months. When hot water was added, they became soft ramen again. It was a simple but revolutionary idea.
The first instant noodle, Chicken Ramen, achieved all of Ando’s goals. It soon became popular all over Japan because people could eat ramen just by adding hot water. Later, instant noodles spread around the world. Today, more than 100 billion servings are eaten every year. From Asia to Europe and America, instant noodles have become a global comfort food.
Ando’s invention shows how one person’s idea can change daily life worldwide. From a small hut in Osaka to kitchens everywhere, instant ramen continues to bring comfort and convenience to people. (251 words)
