A boy stands in a blue suit. His clothes are shiny and beautiful. In 1994, people looked at the picture with X-rays. They found a big dog! The painter covered the dog with paint.

A boy in blue satin stands with his hat in his hand and looks straight at us. It is a full-length portrait, almost life-size. His clothes are 17th-century fashion, more than 100 years older than Gainsborough's time. They are a tribute to Anthony van Dyck, a painter Gainsborough admired. Behind him, a dark, stormy sky and trees spread out.

🦉 Fun Fact! An X-ray in 1994 showed that a large dog was once painted at the lower right. Gainsborough covered it with rocks and grass, but no record explains why. A new study that began in 2018 showed in more detail how he painted over the dog.
