絵のジャンルを一つ発明した、36歳の天才He invented a whole new kind of painting.
フランス北部のヴァランシエンヌに生まれ、パリで活躍した画家です。きれいな服を着た男女が公園で音楽や会話を楽しむ、夢のような場面を描きました。この新しい絵のために、アカデミーは「雅宴画（フェート・ギャラント）」という分類まで作りました。ロココ美術の始まりを告げた画家ですが、病気のため36歳で亡くなりました。
Watteau was born in Valenciennes, in northern France, and worked in Paris. He painted dreamy scenes of elegant men and women enjoying music and talk in parks. The Academy even created a new category for his work, the fête galante. He opened the age of Rococo art, but he died of illness at just 36.
1712年にアカデミーへの入会が認められたヴァトーですが、提出する作品『シテール島への巡礼』を仕上げたのは1717年。5年もかかりました。アカデミーはこの絵のために新しい分類を作って受け入れました。
The Academy accepted Watteau in 1712, but he only handed in his painting, Pilgrimage to Cythera, in 1717. That took five years! The Academy made a new category just for this picture.
晩年の傑作『ジェルサンの看板』は、友人の画商の店にかける看板として描かれました。画商本人は、ヴァトーが「8日間、それも午前中だけ」で描いたと書き残しています。
His late masterpiece, The Shop Sign of Gersaint, was made as a sign for a friend's art shop. The dealer later wrote that Watteau painted it in eight days, working only in the mornings.
