In May 1794, Sharaku suddenly appeared with 28 prints of kabuki actors, published by Tsutaya Jūzaburō. They showed big faces against a dark, shining background. His bold, almost exaggerated portraits caused a stir. But after about ten months and some 140 prints, he disappeared. The leading theory says he was Saitō Jūrobei, a Noh actor serving the Awa domain.
