1One day, the owner of a design company was talking to his employees about saving energy. He asked them to set the air conditioner to 28 degrees during the summer. The employees agreed with his idea. 2The next day, the employees came to work in light clothes, such as polo shirts. They also used small fans on their desks to stay cool, and the owner was pleased with their efforts. 3At the end of July, the owner received the electricity bill. It was 20 percent lower than the year before, and he was very happy with the result. 4In the middle of August, however, the temperature outside reached 38 degrees. The employees were sweating heavily and complained that it was too hot to concentrate. They were making many mistakes in their work, and when a client sent an email to complain, the owner looked very worried.

No.1Please look at the fourth picture. If you were the owner, what would you be thinking?
I'd be thinking, "Saving energy is important, but not at the cost of my employees' health. I should have been more flexible on very hot days."
I'd be thinking, "I'll lower the temperature on extremely hot days. We can save energy in other ways, such as using LED lights and turning off computers at night."
No.2〜No.4(カードを裏返して)
No.2Do you think people in Japan do enough to save energy at home?
No, I don't think so. Many people leave lights and TVs on in empty rooms or keep their air conditioners running while they are out. For example, simply unplugging devices that are not being used can reduce electricity bills. If more people made small changes like these, the country as a whole could save a large amount of energy.
No.3Should companies let employees wear casual clothes to work?
Yes, I think they should. Casual clothes are more comfortable, especially in the hot Japanese summer, and they can help reduce the use of air conditioning. For example, it is much easier to work in a warm office wearing a polo shirt than a suit and tie. Comfortable employees may also feel more relaxed and be more creative.
No.4Today, many countries are experiencing more extreme weather than before. Should the government do more to make homes and buildings energy-efficient?
Yes, I think it should. Buildings use a large amount of energy for heating and cooling, so improving them can greatly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. For example, many older houses in Japan have thin walls and single-pane windows, so they lose a lot of heat in winter. If the government offered more support for better insulation, owners could also save money on energy bills.
