- 1The village was hit by one after another: a flood in spring, a drought in summer, and a fire in autumn.
one calamity after another で「次々と災難が」。chronology(年表・年代順)、coexistence(共存)、coincidence(偶然の一致)は災害の連続を表さない。
【覚える】calamity = disaster = catastrophe(大災害)。one A after another=次々にA。 - 2Smartphones have become so that it is hard to find a train passenger without one.
解説so 〜 that it is hard to find a train passenger without one(持っていない乗客を見つけるのが難しい)から、どこにでもある=ubiquitous(遍在する)。populous(人口の多い)は都市や国など場所に使う。indigenous(土着の・固有の)、analogous(類似した、be analogous to の形)は意味が合わない。
【覚える】ubiquitous = omnipresent = found everywhere(どこにでもある)。 - 3The poison is even in very small amounts, so it must be handled with great care.
解説even in very small amounts(ごく少量でも)と must be handled with great care(細心の注意で扱え)から、強い危険=lethal(致命的な)。lenient(寛大な)と取り違えるのが典型的な罠。legitimate(正当な)、legible(読みやすい)は毒の性質に合わない。
【覚える】lethal = deadly = fatal(致命的な)/lenient=寛大な。 - 4The teacher did not accept her excuse as and marked her absent.
答えa legitimate
解説accept A as legitimate で「Aを正当なものと認める」。 lethal(致命的な)、literal(文字どおりの)も意味が通らない。
【覚える】legitimate = valid = justifiable(正当な)。a legitimate reason / excuse。 - 5Many employees were to work on weekends, but the manager insisted.
答えb reluctant

【覚える】be reluctant to do = be unwilling to do(〜したがらない)。 - 6With so many repeated sentences, much of the report was and could be cut by half.

- 7Children are often more than adults: they recover quickly from setbacks.
解説コロンの後の they recover quickly from setbacks(挫折からすぐ立ち直る)が言い換えになっているので resilient(回復力のある・立ち直りの早い)。salient(際立った)は語尾が同じ -ient の罠。lenient(寛大な)、reluctant(気が進まない)は「立ち直る」の説明にならない。
【覚える】resilient → resilience(回復力・しなやかさ)。 - 8The most feature of the building is its glass roof, which can be seen from miles away.

【覚える】abate = subside = die down(弱まる・収まる)。 - 10The smell of freshly baked bread the whole house.
abate(弱まる・弱める)では「家中に広がる」の意味にならない。relegated(格下げした)、sedated(鎮静させた)も文脈に合わない。
【覚える】permeate = spread through = pervade(〜に浸透する・広がる)。 - 11The politician flatly the rumor, calling it completely false.

For most of human history, people measured time by the sun, the moon, and the seasons. In the early nineteenth century, each town in Britain set its clocks by its own local noon, so that Bristol was about ten minutes behind London. This hardly mattered when travel was slow, but the arrival of the railways made the differences ( 1 ). A timetable that listed a different local time for every station was confusing, and passengers often missed their connections. To solve the problem, railway companies adopted a single standard time ( 2 ) the time kept in London, so that station clocks across the country showed the same time. At first, many people ( 3 ) to the change; some towns even kept clocks with two minute hands, one for local time and one for “railway time.” Gradually, however, resistance ( 4 ), and standard time was finally made official by law in 1880. Whether this was a gain or a loss for ordinary people remains ( 5 ) among historians. What is clear is that the railway changed not only our spatial experience, by shrinking distances, but also our ( 6 ) experience, by making everyone live by the same clock.
