[Block A] For decades, many economists assumed that people make decisions rationally, carefully weighing costs and benefits. In the 1970s, however, psychologists began to show that people often rely on mental shortcuts instead. [Block B] One such shortcut is called "anchoring." When people are given a number before making an estimate, their answers tend to move toward that number, even if it is clearly unrelated. For example, shoppers who see a high "original price" next to a discounted one often judge the discounted price to be a bargain.
