It's like water off a 's back.
It's like water off a duck's back. fish(魚)、swan(白鳥)も定型ではない。
【覚える】like water off a duck's back=馬の耳に念仏・蛙の面に水。 - 2犬猿の仲(激しくけんかする)= They fight like and dogs.
答えa cats
解説fight like cats and dogs が「激しくけんかする」。 foxes(キツネ)、wolves(オオカミ)も定型にない。cats and dogs は rain cats and dogs(土砂降りに降る)の形でも出る。
【覚える】fight like cats and dogs(犬猿の仲)/rain cats and dogs(土砂降り)。 - 3目くそ鼻くそを笑う = That's the pot calling the black.
stove(コンロ)、spoon(スプーン)、plate(皿)は定型ではない。
【覚える】the pot calling the kettle black=目くそ鼻くそを笑う。
解説Fight fire with fire.。 日本語の「毒」につられた poison(毒)、消火の常識からの water(水)、smoke(煙)は誤答。
- 5溺れる者は藁をもつかむ = A drowning man will clutch at a .
答えa straw
A drowning man will clutch at a straw.。 rope(ロープ)、stick(棒)、leaf(葉)は定型ではなく、rope ではむしろ助かってしまう。
【覚える】clutch[grasp]at a straw=わらにもすがる。
解説Don't cast pearls before swine.。 「猫に小判」から coins(硬貨)や gold(金)を選ばせる誤答、diamonds(ダイヤ)も定型ではない。
- 7早起きは三文の徳 = The early bird catches the .
答えa worm
The early bird catches the worm.。 fish(魚)、seed(種)、fly(ハエ)は定型ではない。
- 8明日の百より今日の五十 = A bird in the hand is worth two in the .
答えa bush
A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.。 tree(木)、sky(空)、nest(巣)は定型ではない。
a bird in the hand=確実な物。
- 9Strike while the iron is hot.
Strike while the iron is hot.
Make hay while the sun shines.(日の照るうちに干し草を作れ)も同義。 - 10The squeaky wheel gets the grease.
- 11What goes around comes around.
【覚える】What goes around comes around.=因果応報(You reap what you sow. - 12Every dog has its day.
【覚える】have one's day=全盛期・出番がある。 - 13He is a big fish in a small pond.
【覚える】a big fish in a small pond(狭い世界の大物)⇔ a small fish in a big pond。 - 14Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.
Don't judge a book by its cover.
look … in the mouth=あら探しをする。
Proverbs often show what a culture values. A well-known Japanese saying, "The nail that sticks out gets hammered down," warns people not to stand out too much from the group. In English, by contrast, people say, "The squeaky wheel gets the grease." A wheel that makes noise is the one that receives oil, so the saying suggests that people who speak up are more likely to get what they need. Of course, we should be careful not to draw simple conclusions from a single pair of proverbs. Japanese also has sayings that praise courage, and English has sayings such as "Silence is golden." Still, comparing proverbs can be a useful starting point for thinking about cultural differences.

- 15According to the passage, the English saying about the wheel suggests that .
答えd people who express their needs tend to get help
答:自分の必要を口に出す人は助けてもらいやすい解説本文の people who speak up are more likely to get what they need の言い換え。speak up(声を上げる)→express their needs(必要を口に出す)、are more likely to(〜しやすい)→tend to、get what they need→get help。people should avoid making complaints(不満を言うのは避けるべき)は逆。
【覚える】be likely to=tend to(〜しがちだ)。
答えc decide something too quickly from little evidence
訳問:下線部 draw simple conclusions(単純な結論を引き出す)の意味に最も近いものを選べ。
from a single pair of proverbs(たった1組のことわざから)と合わせ、「少ない根拠で単純に決めつける」=decide something too quickly from little evidence。 end a discussion politely(礼儀正しく議論を終える)、explain an idea in easy words(簡単な言葉で説明する)も違う。
- 17Which of the following best expresses the writer's view?
答えc Comparing proverbs is a useful first step, but it has limits.
starting point=first step Comparing proverbs is a useful first step, but it has limits.。never speak up(決して声を上げない)、has no sayings(ことわざが1つもない)、enough to understand(理解するのに十分)は本文の慎重な言い方を言い過ぎにした誤答。
Of course A. Still B.=譲歩→主張。
- 18A: My little brother says my room is messy, but his room is even messier than mine!
B:答えa That's the pot calling the kettle black.
解説自分のほうがひどいのに人を責めている場面=That's the pot calling the kettle black.(鍋がやかんを黒いと言う)。even messier than mine(ぼくの部屋よりさらに散らかっている)がヒント。Speak of the devil.(噂をすれば影)、Blood is thicker than water.(血は水よりも濃い=家族の絆)、Every dog has its day.(誰にでも良い時がある)は場面が違う。
- 19A: Our old website works perfectly. Why does the manager want to redesign it?
B: I agree with you.答えc If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.(うまくいっている物はいじるな)。 The early bird catches the worm.(早起きは三文の徳)、Fight fire with fire.(毒をもって毒を制す)、Necessity is the mother of invention.(必要は発明の母)は合わない。
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.=余計な手を加えるな。 - 20A: The concert was free, but we had to pay a lot for drinks and snacks inside.
B: Well,答えc there's no such thing as a free lunch.
the proof of the pudding is in the eating(論より証拠)、walls have ears(壁に耳あり)、love is blind(恋は盲目)は場面に合わない。
There's no such thing as a free lunch.=ただより高いものはない。 - 21A: The new school rules have a few problems, so some students want to get rid of all of them.
B: That's going too far.答えa Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.
解説a few problems(いくつかの問題)があるだけなのに all(全部)をなくすのは行き過ぎ=Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.(悪い所と一緒に良い所まで捨てるな)。When the cat's away, the mice will play.(鬼のいぬ間に洗濯)、Clothes make the man.(馬子にも衣装)、A drowning man will clutch at a straw.(溺れる者は藁をもつかむ)は合わない。
【覚える】go too far=やりすぎる。get rid of=取り除く。 - 22A: I didn't make the tennis team, so I joined the drama club instead, and now I love it!
B: Great!答えa When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.

Out of the frying pan into the fire.(一難去ってまた一難)は前より悪くなる話で逆。Too many cooks spoil the broth.(船頭多くして船山に登る)、Familiarity breeds contempt.(なれなれしさは軽蔑を生む)も合わない。
【覚える】make the best of a bad situation=逆境を最大限に生かす。
- 23Three(A) heads are(B) better(C) than(D) one.
答えa (A)
Two heads are better than one. are(主語 heads が複数)、better(good の比較級)、than(〜より)は正しい。
Two heads are better than one.(2人なのに注意)。 - 24Kill two(A) birds by(B) one(C) stone(D).
by は by bus(交通手段)や by Shakespeare(行為者)、by -ing(〜することによって)に使い、「石という道具で」には使わない。two、one、stone は正しい。
【覚える】道具は with(write with a pen)、手段・交通は by(by train)。 - 25The grass is(A) always bluer(B) on the other(C) side of the fence(D).
The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. is(主語 grass は単数)、other、fence は正しい。the fence は省略して on the other side だけでも言う。
There is a Japanese saying, "Fall down seven times, get up eight," which means we should never give up.
解説There is a Japanese saying, "〜," which means … (Fall down seven times, get up eight.)②直訳だけでは伝わらないので which means で意味を足す ③never give up。which の代わりに that means も可。we should never give up は you should never give up/never to give up でもよい。
There is a Japanese saying, "…," which means 〜=日本のことわざ紹介の型。
