- 1W:Are you going to apply for the overseas position, Dan? / M:I'm on the fence. The salary is great, but my kids just started at a new school. / W:Well, the deadline is Friday, so you don't have much time. / M:I know. I'll talk it over with my wife tonight. / Question:What does the man say about the position?
答えb He has not made up his mind about it yet.
I'm on the fence He has not made up his mind about it yet. He has already decided to apply(もう応募を決めた)は逆。He thinks the salary is too low.(給料が低すぎる)は The salary is great と矛盾。His wife has told him not to apply.(妻に反対された)は、妻とは今夜話し合う予定で、まだ意見は出ていない。
【覚える】on the fence=undecided/make up one's mind=決心する。 - 2M:Do you think the repair shop will have my laptop ready by tomorrow? / W:I wouldn't count on it. They told me last time it would take two days, and it took a week. / Question:What does the woman imply?
答えc The laptop will probably not be ready by tomorrow.
I wouldn't count on it The repair shop is the best in town.(町一番の店)は逆の評価。The man should buy a new laptop.(新しいのを買うべき)までは言っていない。She will pick up the laptop for him.(彼女が取りに行く)は話に出ていない。
- 3W:Hi, Mark. Are you joining us for the team dinner on Friday? / M:I'd love to, but I'll have to pass this time. I promised to help my brother move. / W:That's too bad. Maybe next month, then. / Question:What will the man do on Friday?

I'd love to, but I'll have to pass this time I promised to help my brother move。I'd love to だけを聞いて Go to the team dinner.(夕食会に行く)を選ばないこと。Move to a new apartment himself.(自分が引っ越す)は引っ越すのが兄(弟)なので主語のすり替え。
I'd love to, but 〜 / I'll have to pass=断り。 - 4M:Ms. Patel, the client wants us to finish the design two weeks early. / W:Two weeks? That's easier said than done. Half the team is on another project. / M:Should I tell them it's impossible? / W:No, let me run it by the director first. Maybe we can borrow some staff from another department. / Question:What will the woman probably do next?
答えd Discuss the request with the director.
let me run it by the director first を Discuss the request with the director. Tell the client the deadline cannot be changed.(締め切りは変えられないと伝える)は男性の案で、女性が No と退けた。Move half the team to another project.(半分を別案件に移す)は、すでに移っている状況の話。Start working on the design herself.(自分で作業を始める)は言っていない。
easier said than done=言うは易く行うは難し。 - 5W:I heard you're thinking of buying that old house on Elm Street. / M:Yeah, it's a good price. / W:I'd think twice about that. My uncle lived there, and the roof leaked every winter. / Question:What is the woman's opinion?

I'd think twice about that The house is too expensive.(高すぎる)は it's a good price と逆。The man should ask her uncle to fix the roof.(おじに修理を頼む)は、おじは以前の住人で修理の話はしていない。The house is in a good location.(立地がよい)は話に出ていない。

I'll call them myself(自分で電話する)と言い、call → contact と言い換えた選択肢が正解。Wait for his wife to call(妻の電話を待つ)は逆。Go to the dentist during lunch.(昼休みに歯医者へ行く)は、昼休みにするのは電話で、lunch という語の一致だけを狙ったダミー。
【覚える】It slipped my mind.=うっかり忘れた。 - 7W:I can't believe the new manager wants us to come in early every Monday for a meeting. / M:Tell me about it. I have to leave home at six to get here by seven-thirty. / Question:What does the man mean?

解説Tell me about it. He wants the woman to explain the new rule.(規則を説明してほしい)は文字どおりに取ったダミー。He has not heard about the meetings.(会議のことを知らない)も同じ誤解。He likes coming to work early.(早く来るのが好き)は逆。
Tell me about it.=You can say that again.(まったく同感)。 - 8M:Excuse me, I bought this coffee maker here last week, but it stopped working. / W:I'm sorry to hear that. Do you have your receipt? / M:Actually, I threw it away. / W:Hmm. Without a receipt, I'm afraid we can't give you a refund. But we can exchange it for the same model. / M:I suppose that's better than nothing. / Question:What will the man probably do?
答えb Get a replacement coffee maker.
I suppose that's better than nothing(何もないよりはましだ)は、しぶしぶ受け入れるときの言い方。 Look for his receipt at home.(家でレシートを探す)は、捨てたと言っているので合わない。
(A) Urban Beekeeping / In recent years, beekeeping has become popular in many cities. Rooftops of offices and hotels are now home to beehives, and the honey is often sold to local customers. Supporters say that urban beekeeping helps protect bees, whose numbers have been falling in many parts of the world. However, some researchers have raised concerns. Honeybees compete with wild bees for flowers, and if too many hives are placed in one area, there may not be enough food for wild bees. These researchers suggest that cities should focus on planting more flowers rather than simply adding hives. / (B) Why Do We Yawn? / For a long time, many people believed that we yawn because our bodies need more oxygen. However, experiments have shown that breathing air with extra oxygen does not make people yawn less, so scientists have looked for other explanations. One idea is that yawning helps cool the brain. Supporters of this theory point out that people seem to yawn less often in very hot weather, when breathing in warm air would not cool the brain. Scientists are also interested in why yawning is contagious. Some suggest that it may be linked to our ability to understand other people's feelings, but studies have produced mixed results.

- 9(A) What is one reason supporters give for urban beekeeping?
答えc It is thought to help bees, whose numbers are decreasing.
urban beekeeping helps protect bees, whose numbers have been falling を、numbers are decreasing と言い換えている。It allows hotels to save money on food.(ホテルが食費を節約できる)は本文にない。It provides more food for wild bees.(野生のハチの餌が増える)は、むしろ餌が不足するおそれがあるという研究者の懸念と逆。It makes city honey cheaper(都会のはちみつが安くなる)は本文にない。
Supporters say / However, some researchers - 10(A) What do some researchers suggest?
答えc Planting more flowers would be more helpful than adding hives.
解説最後の文 cities should focus on planting more flowers rather than simply adding hives(巣箱を増やすより花を植えることに力を入れるべき)の rather than を比較の形 more helpful than に言い換えた選択肢が正解。Beekeeping should be banned in all cities.(全都市で禁止)は言い過ぎ。Wild bees should be moved to rooftops.(野生のハチを屋上に移す)は本文にない。More hives should be placed in each area.(巣箱を増やす)は研究者の考えと逆。
A rather than B=A is better than B。 - 11(B) Why did scientists look for other explanations for yawning?
答えc The oxygen theory was not supported by experiments.
The oxygen theory was not supported by experiments. People stopped yawning when given extra oxygen.(酸素であくびが止まった)は実験結果と逆。Yawning was found to warm the brain.(脳を温める)は cool(冷やす)と逆。Most people no longer yawn in hot weather.(暑い日はほとんどしない)は less often の言い過ぎ。
- 12(B) What is suggested about contagious yawning?
答えc Its link to understanding others' feelings has not been clearly shown.
解説it may be linked to 〜, but studies have produced mixed results(関係しているかもしれないが、研究結果はまちまち)=関係はまだはっきりしない。It happens only among family members.(家族の間だけ)は本文にない。It has been proven to cool the brain.(脳を冷やすと証明された)は、脳を冷やすのは別の説で、しかも may・suggest(仮説)を proven(事実)にずらしている。Scientists are not interested in it.(関心がない)は are also interested in と逆。

- 23Our budget was cut. = Funding was r.
解説budget(予算)→ funding(資金)、cut(削る)→ reduced(減らされた)という二重の言い換え。 slashed(大幅に削られた)も同じ意味。
【覚える】cut=reduce=slash=scale back。 - 24The project is on hold. = The project has been t stopped.
canceled(中止された)とは違い、後で再開する含みがある。 has been と stopped の間に入る副詞なので temporarily。put 〜 on hold(〜を保留にする)、suspend(一時停止する)も重要。
【覚える】on hold=suspended(一時中断)≠ canceled(中止)。 - 25She turned down the job offer. = She d the job offer.

take off(急に人気が出る)も同じ意味で出る。
【覚える】catch on=take off=become popular。
