Three brothers reach out to three swords. Their father holds the swords. They promise to fight for Rome. The women on the right are very sad. This scene is not in old books. The painter made it up!

This is a legend from ancient Rome. Rome and the nearby city of Alba Longa decided to settle a war with a fight between three champions from each side. Rome chose the three Horatii brothers. Here, the brothers reach toward three swords held up by their father, and swear to fight for their country. On the right, the women sit in sorrow.
