In a busy town square, two groups face each other. On the left is Carnival, a fat man riding a barrel, holding a roasting spit with meat on it. On the right is Lent, a thin woman on a cart pulled by a monk and a nun. She holds out a baker's paddle with two herrings on it. Bruegel painted this in 1559. It is now in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.
