A Vienna businessman, Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer, asked Klimt to paint his wife, Adele. The portrait was finished in 1907. Adele, with dark hair, appears in a world of gold spirals and eye patterns. Her fingers are twisted together in front of her chest. We cannot tell if she is standing or sitting. Her face, shoulders and hands look real, and gold and silver decoration surrounds them.
