Zurbarán was born in Fuente de Cantos, in the Extremadura region of western Spain. His father was a haberdasher. At about 15 he went to Seville to train, and in 1629 the city invited him to live there. For monasteries, he painted praying saints and monks in strong light and deep shadow, full of quiet. He is sometimes called 'the Spanish Caravaggio.' Late in life he moved to Madrid to look for work, and he died there in 1664.
