今のベルギーのトゥルネーに生まれ、画家ロベール・カンパンのもとで学んだと考えられています。のちにブリュッセル市の公式画家になりました。ファン・エイクの細かい描写を受けつぎながら、人の悲しみや祈りの気持ちを強く表したことで知られます。代表作「十字架降下」（プラド美術館）は、ヨーロッパ中の画家に写され、大きな影響をあたえました。
Rogier was born in Tournai, in today's Belgium, and probably trained with the painter Robert Campin. Later he became the official painter of the city of Brussels. He kept the fine detail of Van Eyck, but he is known for showing deep sorrow and prayer in people's faces. His Descent from the Cross in the Prado was copied by artists across Europe and had a huge influence.
