Takahashi Yuichi was born in Edo into a samurai family of the Sano domain. As a young man, he saw a Western lithograph and was shocked by how real it looked. He decided to learn oil painting. He studied with the British artist Charles Wirgman in Yokohama and became one of the first true oil painters in Japan. His Salmon, showing a salted fish hanging from a rope, looks amazingly real. It is an Important Cultural Property.
