Sōtatsu worked in Kyoto in the early Edo period, but no one knows when he was born or died. He is thought to have run a painting workshop called Tawaraya, making painted fans and more. He used gold and silver boldly and was skilled at tarashikomi, letting wet colors bleed into each other. He is famous for the National Treasure Wind God and Thunder God screens and is seen as the founder of what was later called the Rinpa school.
