オランダのハールレムで、額縁職人で画家でもあった父のもとに生まれました。おじのサロモン・ファン・ロイスダールも風景画家です。1648年に画家組合に入り、1657年ごろアムステルダムへ移ります。森や滝、風車、浜辺などを、重い雲と光の変化でドラマチックに描きました。約700点が彼の作品とされ、のちのイギリスやドイツの画家や作家にも愛されました。
Ruisdael was born in Haarlem, the Netherlands. His father was a frame maker and painter, and his uncle Salomon van Ruysdael was also a landscape painter. He joined the painters' guild in 1648 and moved to Amsterdam around 1657. He painted forests, waterfalls, windmills and beaches, using heavy clouds and changing light to create drama. About 700 paintings are thought to be his, and later artists and writers in Britain and Germany admired him.
