Nagasawa Rosetsu 1754–1799・Japan
応挙の弟子は、自由すぎる奇想の画家Ōkyo's pupil who painted with wild freedom.
丹波篠山（今の兵庫県）の武士の家に生まれ、円山応挙の弟子になりました。師匠ゆずりの確かな写生の力に、大胆な構図とユーモアを加えた自由な画風で知られます。和歌山県串本の無量寺のふすまに描いた、画面いっぱいに飛び出してくるような《虎図》は特に有名です。46歳で大坂で亡くなりました。
Rosetsu was born into a samurai family in Sasayama, Tanba (now Hyōgo), and became a pupil of Maruyama Ōkyo. To his teacher's careful realism, he added bold compositions and humor. His most famous work is the Tiger on sliding doors at Muryō-ji temple in Kushimoto, Wakayama. The tiger seems to leap out at you. He died in Osaka at 46.
当時の日本に虎はいなかったので、絵師たちは毛皮や中国の絵を手本にしました。芦雪の虎は目が丸く、どこか子ネコのようにも見えると話題になります。
There were no tigers in Japan then, so painters used furs and Chinese paintings as models. Rosetsu's tiger has round eyes, and many people say it looks a bit like a kitten.
芦雪には、たった3センチほどの四角い紙に、五百人の羅漢（仏の弟子）を描いた作品があります。大きなふすま絵から豆つぶのような絵まで、何でも描けたのです。
Rosetsu painted 500 Buddhist saints on a piece of paper only about 3 centimeters square. He could paint anything, from huge sliding doors to tiny pictures.
