Roberts was born near Edinburgh, Scotland, the son of a shoemaker. He trained for seven years as a house painter and decorator, then became a scene painter for theaters, later working in London. In time he became a full-time artist and traveled to Spain, Egypt and the Middle East, drawing ancient ruins and old towns. In 1841 he was elected a full member of the Royal Academy, and grand books of prints based on his travel drawings became hugely popular.
