Poussin was born in Les Andelys in Normandy, France, and moved to Rome at about 30. He studied ancient sculpture and Raphael, and painted scenes from myths and the Bible with carefully planned compositions and calm colors. King Louis XIII called him back to Paris, but after about two years he returned to Rome and stayed there until he died. He is seen as the model of French classical painting.
