オランダのアメルスフォールトに生まれました。はじめは木や風車などの風景を描いていましたが、木の枝をだんだん線に変えていき、ついに縦と横の黒い線と、赤・青・黄の三原色、白と灰色だけの絵にたどりつきます。仲間と雑誌『デ・ステイル』をつくり、建築やデザインにも大きな影響を与えました。晩年はニューヨークで暮らしました。
Mondrian was born in Amersfoort, the Netherlands. At first he painted landscapes, like trees and windmills. Little by little, he turned branches into lines. In the end, he used only black vertical and horizontal lines, the three primary colors red, blue and yellow, and white and grey. With friends he started the magazine De Stijl, which greatly influenced architecture and design. He spent his last years in New York.
