Mantegna was born near Padua and trained as a boy with the painter Squarcione. He loved the remains of ancient Rome, and his figures look sharp and solid, like stone carvings. He worked for many years as court painter to the Gonzaga family in Mantua. On the ceiling of the Camera degli Sposi, he painted what looks like a round opening to the sky. He is also known for his bold use of perspective.
