Macke was born in Meschede in western Germany and grew up in Cologne and Bonn. He studied art in Düsseldorf. In Paris he saw Impressionist and other new paintings, and he went on to create a bright, colorful world of his own. He was close to Franz Marc, Kandinsky and the other Blue Rider artists. He liked to paint happy everyday scenes, such as people walking in parks or looking into shop windows.
