Van Leemput was born in Antwerp, Flanders, and became a master in the city's painters' guild in 1628–29. Around 1632 he moved to London. He is thought to have worked close to Anthony van Dyck, another painter from Antwerp, and made many copies of his portraits. In England people called him 'Remée.' He also bought and sold art. Today he is best known for his copy of a lost mural by Holbein.
