アムステルダムに生まれ、風景画家ヤーコプ・ファン・ライスダールに学びました。森や水車小屋のある、おだやかなオランダの田舎の風景を得意としました。30歳ごろに結婚してからは、アムステルダム市でワインの量を測る役人として働き、絵を描く数は減りました。代表作「ミッデルハルニスの並木道」（1689年）は、ロンドンのナショナル・ギャラリーにあります。
Hobbema was born in Amsterdam and studied with the landscape painter Jacob van Ruisdael. He was good at calm Dutch country scenes with woods and watermills. After he married at about 30, he took a job with the city of Amsterdam measuring wine, and he painted less. His best-known work, The Avenue at Middelharnis (1689), is in the National Gallery in London.
