1470年ごろ、ドイツのヴュルツブルクに生まれたと考えられています。マインツの大司教に仕える宮廷画家として、祭壇画などを描きました。本当の名前はマティス・ゴートハルト・ナイトハルトとされ、「グリューネヴァルト」はのちについたまちがった呼び名です。残る絵はわずかですが、強い色と光で心をゆさぶる作品は、20世紀の画家たちにも大きな影響をあたえました。
Grünewald is thought to have been born around 1470 in Würzburg, Germany. He worked as a court painter for the Archbishops of Mainz and painted altarpieces and other works. His real name was probably Mathis Gothart Nithart; 'Grünewald' is a mistaken name given to him later. Only a few of his paintings survive, but their strong colors and light still move people, and they had a great influence on 20th-century artists.
