馬を愛し、32歳で散った『メデューズ号』の画家The horse-loving painter of The Raft of the Medusa
フランス北部のルーアンに生まれました。馬が大好きで、馬や兵士を力強く描きました。1816年に実際に起きた軍艦メデューズ号の遭難事件を、縦約5メートル、横約7メートルの巨大な画面に描いた『メデューズ号の筏』で大きな話題を呼び、ロマン主義の先がけとなりました。しかし乗馬での事故などが重なって体をこわし、32歳の若さで亡くなりました。
Géricault was born in Rouen, in northern France. He loved horses and painted horses and soldiers with great power. The Raft of the Medusa, about a real shipwreck in 1816, is about 5 meters tall and 7 meters wide. It caused a sensation and helped start Romanticism. But after riding accidents and illness, he died at just 32.
『メデューズ号の筏』を描くため、ジェリコーは生き残った人に話を聞き、筏の模型まで作りました。外に遊びに出ないよう、自分の頭をそってアトリエにこもったと言われます。
To paint The Raft of the Medusa, Géricault interviewed survivors and even built a model of the raft. He is said to have shaved his head so he would not go out and would stay in his studio.
1821年の『エプソムの競馬』では、馬が前足も後ろ足もいっぱいにのばして走っています。ところが約半世紀後、マイブリッジの連続写真で、本物の馬はこんな形では走らないことがわかりました。
In The Epsom Derby (1821), the horses stretch their front and back legs out wide. About 50 years later, Muybridge's photographs showed that real galloping horses never move like that.
