Eisen was born into a samurai family in Edo, but he became an ukiyo-e artist young to support his family. His beauties were different from the slim, gentle women of earlier artists. They had strong eyes and a bold, worldly charm. He also made landscapes. He began the series Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaidō, which Hiroshige later finished. He also wrote a book about the history of ukiyo-e.
