台所のコップや果物を、宝石のように描いた人He painted kitchen cups and fruit like jewels.
パリに生まれ、ほとんどパリから出ずにくらした画家です。ロココの華やかな絵がはやった時代に、台所の道具や果物、シャボン玉で遊ぶ子どもなど、ふつうの生活の一場面を静かに描きました。ゆっくり時間をかけ、絵の具を何度も重ねてやわらかな光を出すのが得意で、同じ時代の批評家ディドロにも絶賛されました。
Chardin was born in Paris and spent almost his whole life there. In an age of showy Rococo art, he painted quiet everyday things: kitchen pots, fruit, and children blowing soap bubbles. He worked slowly, building up layers of paint to create a soft, glowing light. The famous critic Diderot praised him highly.
1728年、シャルダンは王立絵画彫刻アカデミーの会員になります。そのとき審査で見せた絵の一つが、台所につるされた大きな魚のエイを描いた『赤エイ』でした。今もルーヴル美術館にあります。
In 1728, Chardin joined the Royal Academy of Painting. One of the works he showed was The Ray, a picture of a big fish hanging in a kitchen. It is still in the Louvre today.
年をとって目が悪くなると、シャルダンは油絵から、色のついたチョークのようなパステルに切りかえました。目に眼鏡をかけ、頭に布を巻いた自画像は、晩年のパステル画の名作です。
When his eyes grew weak in old age, Chardin switched from oil paint to pastels, a kind of colored chalk. His late self-portraits, with glasses and a cloth tied around his head, are pastel masterpieces.
シャルダンはアカデミーの会計係をつとめ、パリの公式展覧会「サロン」で、どの絵をどこに飾るかを決める係も長く担当しました。画家仲間からの信頼が厚かったことがわかります。
Chardin was the Academy's treasurer. For many years, he also decided where each painting hung at the Salon, the official exhibition in Paris. Other artists clearly trusted him.
