The sculptor who made marble look soft

Canova was born into a family of stonecutters in Possagno, a small village in the Republic of Venice. He studied in Venice and Rome. His pure, graceful works, inspired by ancient Greek and Roman statues, made him the most famous sculptor in Europe. In Psyche Revived by Cupid's Kiss, hard marble looks like soft skin and feathers. Napoleon and the Pope both ordered works from him.
