イタリアのミラノに生まれ、はじめは大聖堂のステンドグラスなどをデザインしていました。のちにハプスブルク家の宮廷画家となり、ウィーンとプラハで3代の皇帝に仕えます。果物や野菜、花、魚などを組み合わせて人の顔に見せる絵で知られ、皇帝ルドルフ2世を果物と野菜で描いた「ウェルトゥムヌス」が有名です。宮廷のお祭りの衣装も考えました。
Arcimboldo was born in Milan, Italy. At first he designed stained glass for the cathedral. Later he became a court painter for the Habsburg family and served three emperors in Vienna and Prague. He is famous for faces made of fruit, vegetables, flowers and fish. In Vertumnus, he painted Emperor Rudolf II entirely from fruit and vegetables. He also designed costumes for court festivals.
