黒海に面したクリミア半島の港町フェオドシヤに、アルメニア系の家族の子として生まれました。サンクトペテルブルクの美術アカデミーで学び、荒れ狂う嵐の海、月に照らされた静かな海、海戦などを、すき通るような光で描きました。ロシア海軍の公式画家にもなっています。晩年まで故郷フェオドシヤで暮らし、町のために学校や美術館もつくりました。
Aivazovsky was born into an Armenian family in Feodosia, a port town on the Black Sea in Crimea. He studied at the Academy of Arts in St Petersburg. He painted stormy seas, calm moonlit waters and sea battles, all filled with glowing light. He also became an official painter for the Russian Navy. He lived in Feodosia until the end of his life and built a school and a gallery for the town.
