Can online voting significantly increase voter turnout?
I believe online voting can significantly increase voter turnout.
- convenienceMany people do not vote simply because they are busy or find it hard to go to a polling station. Being able to vote from a smartphone would remove this barrier, especially for young workers.
- accessOnline voting would help people who have difficulty traveling, such as older people, people with disabilities, and citizens living overseas. Estonia, for example, has offered internet voting in national elections for many years.
- digital generationYoung people are used to doing almost everything online, from banking to shopping. Letting them vote in the same way would make politics feel more connected to their daily lives.
I don't believe online voting alone can significantly increase voter turnout.
- interest mattersThe main reason many people do not vote is a lack of interest in politics, not inconvenience. Even with online voting, people who feel their vote does not matter will still stay at home.
- security risksOnline systems can be targeted by hackers, which could damage trust in election results. If even a small problem occurred, many voters might stop believing in the system.
- secret ballotAt home, it is hard to make sure that people vote freely and in secret. A family member or an employer, for example, could pressure someone to vote for a particular candidate.

QBut wouldn't online voting at least help busy young people?
Yes, I agree it would help some of them. However, early voting is already available for more than a week before national elections in Japan, and young people's turnout is still low. This suggests that the real problem is interest, not convenience.
QWhat do you think would actually raise turnout?
I think better political education is the key. If people understand how politics affects their wages, housing, and taxes, they will see a reason to vote. Politicians also need to talk more about issues that matter to young people.
QDo you think online voting will be introduced in Japan in the future?
I think it probably will, perhaps starting with Japanese citizens living overseas. As security technology improves, more people may come to trust it. But I believe it should be introduced step by step, with careful testing.
