Can AI and automation solve Japan's labor shortage?
I believe AI and automation can largely solve Japan's labor shortage, because they are already taking over tasks in many industries.
- routine workAI can handle office tasks such as data entry, scheduling, and customer inquiries. This allows fewer workers to do the same amount of work.
- physical laborRobots are increasingly used in warehouses, restaurants, and farms. For example, serving robots are now a common sight in many family restaurants in Japan.
- supporting care workersIn nursing care, sensors and robotic suits can reduce the physical burden on staff. This helps experienced workers stay in their jobs longer.
I don't think AI and automation can solve the labor shortage on their own, because many jobs still require a human touch.
- human careJobs such as nursing care, childcare, and teaching depend on trust and emotional connection. Machines can assist, but they cannot replace the people at the center of these jobs.
- cost for small firmsMost Japanese companies are small or medium-sized, and many cannot afford expensive robots or AI systems. The labor shortage is often worst in exactly these firms.
- new skills neededAutomation creates demand for engineers and technicians who can manage the new systems. Japan is already short of such digital talent.
QCan robots really take care of elderly people?
Not completely, and I don't think they should. Admittedly, elderly people need human warmth and conversation. However, robots can take over heavy physical tasks, such as lifting patients, so that care workers have more time to talk with them. In that sense, technology can make care more human, not less.
QWhat will happen to workers whose jobs are replaced?
Some workers will certainly need to change jobs. That's why the government and companies should invest in retraining programs. In a country with a shrinking population, I believe there will be plenty of new roles for people who learn new skills.
QWhich industries do you think will benefit most from automation?
I think logistics will benefit the most. Japan is facing a serious shortage of truck drivers, and automated warehouses and self-driving trucks could ease the pressure. Agriculture is another example, since many farmers are elderly and drones can already help with spraying fields.
