Why We Are Losing the Stars

— Where did the night sky go? —

Long ago, on a clear night, people could see thousands of stars. The sky was a glowing river of light. But today, many people in big cities can see only a few dozen stars, or none at all. Where did the stars go?

The stars have not disappeared. The problem is light pollution. Cities are full of bright lights: streetlights, signs, buildings, and cars. At night, all this light shines up into the sky.

This light scatters in the air and creates a soft glow over the city. The glow is so bright that it hides the faint light of the stars. We simply cannot see them through all the brightness. The brighter the city, the fewer stars we see.

Light pollution is not only sad for stargazers. It confuses animals too. Baby sea turtles, which follow light to the sea, may crawl the wrong way. Birds that travel at night can lose their path.

The good news is that this problem is easy to fix. Unlike many kinds of pollution, light pollution stops the moment we turn off a light. Better lamps that point downward also help a lot.

So the stars are still up there, waiting. If we use light more wisely, we can bring back the night sky for everyone, and help the animals find their way again.

01Long ago, on a clear night, people could see thousands of stars. The sky was a glowing river of light. But today, many people in big cities can see only a few dozen stars, or none at all. Where did the stars go?

02The stars have not disappeared. The problem is light pollution. Cities are full of bright lights: streetlights, signs, buildings, and cars. At night, all this light shines up into the sky.

03This light scatters in the air and creates a soft glow over the city. The glow is so bright that it hides the faint light of the stars. We simply cannot see them through all the brightness. The brighter the city, the fewer stars we see.

04Light pollution is not only sad for stargazers. It confuses animals too. Baby sea turtles, which follow light to the sea, may crawl the wrong way. Birds that travel at night can lose their path.

05The good news is that this problem is easy to fix. Unlike many kinds of pollution, light pollution stops the moment we turn off a light. Better lamps that point downward also help a lot.

06So the stars are still up there, waiting. If we use light more wisely, we can bring back the night sky for everyone, and help the animals find their way again.

Day60(またたく星)やDay79(プラスチック)とも環境でつながりますね。
