The tea bag is a small, simple thing. You drop it in hot water, wait a moment, and enjoy your tea. But like many great ideas, the tea bag was born by accident, more than a hundred years ago.

The story begins around 1908 in New York. A tea seller named Thomas Sullivan wanted to send samples of his tea to customers. To save money, he put small amounts of tea leaves into little silk bags.

Sullivan only meant the bags to hold the samples. He expected customers to open them and pour the leaves into a pot, as usual. That was the normal way to make tea at the time. Loose leaves in a pot were the standard.

But the customers misunderstood. They thought the whole bag should go into the hot water. To their surprise, it worked beautifully. The tea was easy to make, and there were no leaves to clean up.

Customers loved this new, tidy way to drink tea. They began asking Sullivan for more of the little bags. A simple mistake had quietly created a brand-new product. Sullivan became known for this lucky idea.

Over the years, the silk was replaced with paper, and tea bags spread across the world. So your quick cup of tea began with a misunderstanding, not a careful plan.

01The tea bag is a small, simple thing. You drop it in hot water, wait a moment, and enjoy your tea. But like many great ideas, the tea bag was born by accident, more than a hundred years ago.

02The story begins around 1908 in New York. A tea seller named Thomas Sullivan wanted to send samples of his tea to customers. To save money, he put small amounts of tea leaves into little silk bags.

03Sullivan only meant the bags to hold the samples. He expected customers to open them and pour the leaves into a pot, as usual. That was the normal way to make tea at the time. Loose leaves in a pot were the standard.

04But the customers misunderstood. They thought the whole bag should go into the hot water. To their surprise, it worked beautifully. The tea was easy to make, and there were no leaves to clean up.

05Customers loved this new, tidy way to drink tea. They began asking Sullivan for more of the little bags. A simple mistake had quietly created a brand-new product. Sullivan became known for this lucky idea.

06Over the years, the silk was replaced with paper, and tea bags spread across the world. So your quick cup of tea began with a misunderstanding, not a careful plan.
